Five of the eight teams that advanced to the Gold Bracket in Saturday’s Perryville Volleyball Tournament were Class 1 teams, with Valle Catholic coming out on top edging Advance in an intense 25-23, 25-23 victory to claim the Gold Bracket championship.
The Warriors only dropped one set all day (to Bloomfield) in the 20-team tournament at multiple locations throughout the city of Perryville, Mo. Valle Catholic swept St. Vincent (25-23, 25-19) and then downed MAAA Conference rival Arcadia Valley (25-18, 25-21) before defeating the Hornets for the title.
The Warriors improved to 22-2-1 and host crosstown rival Ste. Genevieve on Monday.
Advance, making its first appearance in the fourth annual tournament, finished 2-1-1 in pool play. The Hornets (19-5-2) avenged an earlier-season loss to SCAA Conference nemesis Bernie in the first round of the Gold Bracket before topping Class 1 contender Bismarck in straight sets to move on to the title match. The Indians (18-4-2) eked out a win over host Perryville in a three-set thriller 23-25, 25-13, 25-13, marking the only loss of the day for the Pirates (16-11-4).
Bernie (11-8-4) will have a chance for revenge Monday against the Hornets as both teams will face each other again for a third time this season in the opening night of the SCAA Conference Tournament at Puxico, Mo. The Mules and Hornets are in a pool with Class 3 powerhouse Dexter and Bloomfield.
