I am torn about the UAW strike. I get it that the Big 3 are having record profits and executives are making outlandish salaries and bonuses, and the union members want their fair share. I was surprised a google search claims the ave union salary is only $52K and hourly wage $25 per hr. The guys I know that work at STL plants make a lot more than $52K, but they've worked there a long time and work tons of overtime. A 40% pay increase sounds huge, plus a 32 hr work week. I worry about what effect it would have on the price of cars and eventually the economy.

Take my nephew for example who works at GM in Wentzville. He's worked there 25+ yrs, makes about $35/hr, and works 6-7 days a week/10-12 hrs per day for what seems like forever as he takes all the overtime he can get at about $50 per hr. For the sake of argument, if he averages 60 hrs per week he is making about $125K per year currently. A 40% increase would be $175K. Management if offering a 20% increase that would be $150K per year for him. His job - he drives cars from the end of assembly line to the parking lot and parks them!!!!!

They want their fair share? Would the same workers be lining up to take a big pay cut if the company was having a tough time?

"The Big Three CEOs saw their pay increase by 40% over the last four years, while our pay only went up by 6%," UAW President Shawn Fain said at a news conference last week.

The average hourly wage for workers manufacturing motor vehicles and parts, adjusted for inflation, has dropped by more than 20% in the past two decades, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
.

The (Goldman Sachs) firm also modeled the cost of the UAW’s proposed 40% wage increase, projecting $4 billion to $6 billion in added costs over four years for GM and Ford each.

I just don't understand the conservative thinking on this. A strike could cost them around 2.5 to 3 billion. It just doesn't make sense.
If everyone got the same raise percentage as the CEO that would at least make sense. It's not like she has 300 times more work than the average worker.

Not to mention the 2 of the big 3 were bailed out by the government/us, and management pay didn't take a hit for needing that bail out in the first place.

Yeah 3R, that really burns my butt!!! How do we allow that to happen over and over!!! It's insane

Between the Claycomo Ford Plant and the Fairfax GM plant, it will hit the KC area hard !
I saw an interview with the GM CEO who makes 33MILLION a year and her raise was 24%. The interviewer asked her if she thought the plant workers should at least get a 34% raise too and she said a large part of her raises are tied to how the company does. I guess she doesn't think the auto workers contribute to how the company does.
