Does anyone have a record of the number of teams participating in MOHS football districts/playoffs each year? I was just wondering because I noticed that since Class 5 was made the catch-all in 2002 that it still only has 37 teams (if Class 1-4 had no vacancies). Didn't it have more than that (or was it about the same) in 2002 or is my memory going?

Thanks, maybe it wasn't until 2004-2005 (or later) that those oddball districts starting appearing. I remember some 5 team round-robin districts where district match-ups would start in Week 5 or 6 and there was a bye week.

324 was this last cycle. Go to football district page and count schools. Then you can see the districts with holes in them. Only classes this last cycle filled to the level they were supposed to be was Class 6 with 32 and Class 4 with 64. Class 5 had 44 I think. 62-59-63-64-44-32 from bottom to top. Just went back and looked.

Classes 5A through 1A had 64 teams apiece in 2002. 5A was split into two classes and the "A" was dropped from classification. The idea was then to let Class 5 become the catch-all starting with 32 teams and then to gradually expand over time until it reached 64 teams at which point Class 6 would become the catch-all Class, however; with teams beginning to drop football there will be a switch back to 5 Classes if the number of 11-man teams falls back below 320.

2002-03: 32
2004-05: 35
2006-07: 36
2008-09: 46
2010-11: 51
2012-13: 50
2014-15: 53
2016-17: 44
2018: 36 tentatively based on the net change in the number of football teams. Will probably be somewhere around 40.
