I'm posting this link here:

After reading this article, I noticed mention of an athlete who intends to Reclassify (staying another year) to graduate in 2022, instead of 2021. My question for you all is did I read this right? How will this impact Missouri High School sports as a whole dealing with Covid-19. Lastly, do y'all think it's something like this (if I read it right) will be fair to returning student athletes. Thanks for your time and thoughts.

He is reclassifying into 2022, but it will be at a prep school. There is no option to stay in HS. It is very common.

Probably will attend Linc Year Prep there in Branson and work on his game to see if he can get a better offer than what he has. MSHSAA rules states that you have 8 consecutive semesters for your eligibility . Rule was put in because a lady at Versailles HS tore her knee up, sat out a year to rehab and then came back to do her senior year. I believe that was early 90's. Found a loop hole in the rule. I believe she went on to play at UMSL and is now a great D-3 coach.

There have been a significant number of high profile basketball players reclassifY and take an extra year of prep school for one reason or another., Lamar Odom comes to mind who played at the TofC in the -1990s.

There have been several newly formed prep schools pop up in recent years, but for the most part, these are very traditional institutions in the northeast with history and prestige.

These programs may, depending on location, etc, compete against high school teams. But they are not a part of postseasons and mostly play like schools, JUCOs, college JV teams, etc.

There have also been a lot of players reclassify the other direction and graduate a year early and get to the college game and then the NBA a year earlier.

Among four and five star athletes, there have been far, far more kids reclassify this direction and graduate and be an NCAA qualifier a year early then take an extra year at prep school in recent years

Unfortunately, the next time I hear a sports fan recognize that as achievement will be the first —, but it happens every year.

I just got done with Parent/Teacher conferences. My heart is breaking a bit for some of my students. A couple of my seniors in baseball and soccer were being sought after. I would say 2-3 star athletes maybe higher for the soccer player. All the schools that showed interest in them pre-covid are saying all their seniors are staying and using the extra year the NCAA gave them so there isn't any money available. Why would any of NCAA athletes choose to do anything but stay. Free education, college life.
The high school seniors are going to get screwed in every sport. The prep school or hopefully getting a community college spot (which will be a crowded space) might be there only options this year.

That is why it is important to put time into the education part of it. You are correct. Colleges are cutting back on scholarship money and then add the seniors that will be staying and the athletic money is just not going to be there. Find a school, go on the academic side and use a redshirt year to get stronger and adapt to the college game. Not the best way, but this years seniors will have to adapt.

Juco kids were also allowed to stay for the sophomore year so there will be a shortage of scholies in some of those too.
