RALEIGH (WTVD) --
Raleigh police say a man found dead on the side of the road last week accidentally stabbed himself with a knife.
The body of a 50-year-old Ausencio Leal Velasquez was found along the 3800 block of South Wilmington Street at Tryon Road on the morning of Aug. 13.
An autopsy showed that Velasquez fell or slumped backward to the ground and a large, unsheathed knife in a tote bag strapped over his shoulder was forced upward, stabbing him under his left arm.
Police say the fatal wound appeared to have been sustained accidentally, and they do not suspect foul play.

PHOENIXVILLE — A man reportedly stabbed himself after falling on a knife while playing with a child Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The unidentified man was reportedly in a home on Winding River Lane with an adult woman and a child Tuesday when police were called to the residence, according to Phoenixville Police Chief William Mossman.
The call came in as a stabbing.
Mossman said the wounded man told police and ambulance crews that he’d been “playfully” chasing a child around the residence when he slipped and fell while holding a knife and accidentally stabbed himself in the side.
It’s believed the man went to Paoli Hospital for surgery.
Why he was holding a knife while playing with a child is not clear.
Both the wounded man and the woman in the home at the time say it was an accident but the Phoenixville Police are following up tomorrow with interview.
Mossman said he hopes to “have a better understanding” of the situation Wednesday.

A Toronto man in his 60s has apparently bled to death from a stab wound received while taking out his recycling.
A person walking their dog a little after midnight Thursday found the man without vital signs at the top of a staircase outside Thomas Eglie Drive near Leaside.
The man had a stab wound, and was rushed to hospital but shortly after was pronounced dead.
Police say the man may have fallen on a knife while taking out his recycling and cut his femoral artery.
The investigation is ongoing, said police media relations officer Victor Kwong.
“It’s still being investigated but it appears as though the stab wound was not caused by anyone else, nor was it self-inflicted intentionally,” Kwong said.
Although the incident may not be criminal in nature, police are waiting until the autopsy and forensic results are back before continuing to investigate.
The man has yet to be identified publicly.
