People seriously debating if not vaccinating their children against potentially debilitating and fatal diseases is a good idea.

You seem really bothered by this.
What gets me is the fact that this topic seems to cross all ideology.
Bill Maher, Jim Carrey, and Jenny McCarthy are some who believe they are bad.
Chris Christie and Rand Paul believe that we should not be forced to vaccinate.
Strange bed fellows.

It's funny that one of the staunchest supporters of the science climate change (Maher) is on the anti-vaccination train.

I read an interesting editorial asking where are the African-American anti-vaxxer's. If there was a minority who should be leery of the government forcing any type of vaccination, it would be that minority, but they don't seem to be bothered.

Polling data aren't great, but it appears to not be a partisan topic based on the limited polling data that are out there. Both sides have a subset of people who embrace the crazy on this.

The split is really age based, not by political party. People old enough to remember polio, measles, mumps, and other nasty diseases are almost universally in favor of vaccinations and they are more likely to support a law mandating vaccinations for children who wish to attend public schools. People in their 20s and 30s are more likely to have views not aligned with the extensive science underlying vaccines.

Sadly, it's a symptom of the vaccines working too well - people focus on stupid "what ifs" instead of the disease which is being prevented.

If my kid gets vaccinated, why the concern if someone elses kid who isn't goes to school with him? If the vaccine works there shouldn't be a problem. There are risks involved with any vaccine....very small risks. There are risks involved with not getting the vaccines....very small risks. The influx of foreigners carrying diseases and not vaccinated increase the likelihood of a problem when not vaccinated. All that said, freedom of choice should be paramount.

Two issues:

Kids too young to vaccinate depend upon herd immunity. This is the big thing. For example, the first dose of the MMR vaccine isn't given until 12 months because that is the point at which science has shown kids are ready to receive the vaccine. Some of these diseases like measles can be life threatening for unvaccinated infants. There's also immunocompromised children who cannot receive vaccines.

There are some diseases have affected people who were previously vaccinated. Look at the mumps outbreak this year in the NHL. Look at the rebirth of whooping cough in the US.

People who refuse to vaccinate their kids are, for no better term, idiots.

But I can't imagine forcing a parent to stick a needle in their arm?

I think you can mandate them for attendance at public schools. I do not support a full mandate beyond that.

I can agree with that! Add daycares to that list.

Add anybody else who will be in contact with my grand kids before they get all their shots.

Hey I am there with ya. But we can't even keep track of who is in the US, much less the kids who have and haven't been vaccinated.

Daycares should absolutely be able to turn away parents who do not vaccinate. But, I'm a little leery of mandating private day cares be required to do so unless there is a real issue with lack of availability of day cares which mandate vaccinations.

If the face, and body, of the resistance movement were someone other than the person who showed off her body 20 some years ago in the bunny magazine, it might not have the traction it has. It amazes me that she has credibility on this topic when she has a few claims to fame and none of them were for her brain.

If I was a daycare that would be my selling point right now. Make the parents show proof of vaccination. Parents are awesome. I spent a few nights in Cardinal Glennon last year with our three month old, because parents decided to send their RSV sick child to daycare instead of keeping them home. The kid looked like the scene from Alien when he's breathing on Ripley's face, ooze coming out of all holes.
