Class 1, No. 1, South Shelby (10-2 in 2009)
Returning to Class 1 this season after a two-year cycle in class 2
the Cardinals enter ranked as the top team in the Show-Me State
and earn the nod as the pre-season favorite in the Truman
Division of the Clarence Cannon Conference.
"We have a great deal of experience and size coming back
for a class 1 team", commented head coach Rob Wilt. "Our strength is plying a physical
type game on both sides of the ball. We will be young in
our secondary, however they are a talented young group."
The Cardinals will return seven seven starters on offense and
seven defensive starters. Senior quarterback Alex O'Laughlin(5-10 165)
returns to lead an offense that includes 7 returning starters. A season
ago O'Laughlin passed for nearly 600-yards and 7 touchdowns. Senior
Shane Smith(6-4 270) is a load, he returns at center on offense
and defensive end after earning numerous honors a season ago. Junior
Wes Mefford(5-10 160) returns listed as a wide receiver.
A season ago he compiled 580 rushing yards, 200 receiving yards, and 7
touchdowns. Senior
Jordan Thompson(5-10
215) returns at fullback where he gained 610-yards and scored 7 touchdowns a
season ago.
Ethan Decker(6-2 300) returns at tackle on
both offense and defense along with senior Ethan Dodd(6-3 190)
an offensive guard and linebacker. Thompson(5-10
215) returns at defensive end along with Mefford a speedy defensive back. Defensive
tackle Josh Hughart(6-1 170) returns along with junior
linebacker Mason Greenwell(5-10 165).
Newcomers to watch include:
Alex Blackford RB/DB 5'10 150 soph; Ben Werr T 5'10 210 sr.
10-2 a season ago the Cardinals are
loaded, experienced, and ready to make their mark when November comes.
