Vashon defeated St. Mary's tonight in overtime in what many fans say " Was the most entertaining " game of the year. Kelvin Lee St. Mary's team was ahead in the score for most of the first 32 minutes of play. Vashon never gave up and came back to send the game into overtime. Free throw shooting and key turnovers led to the Dragons down fall.

There is little doubt Vashon plays the best M/M defense in the state of Missouri and very few team can tolerate this harassing defense for 32 minutes. The Sikeston Bulldogs will get their opportunity this weekend in a high stake game of playing in the final four or go home.

Sikeston will be the underdog but could rise to the occasion to play another day. Kevin Jones ( Sophomore ) will decide Sikeston's fate but the Woverines will hound him all night or until he breaks or raises his fist in victory. We will see how tough Fred Thatch is during this competition as Mario McKinney ( Soph ) will go to war with him.

This will be the biggest test of the year for the young Bulldogs. It will take a near perfect game for the Bulldogs to compete but basketball is important in Sikeston, Missouri.

I know one thing for sure, Rocket and I will be in Hillsboro, Missouri around 11:00 AM on Sat. My wife will be there as well.

11am???? May not be soon enough. I've seen Sikeston fans line up two hours or more before game time and I know there were people lined up outside of Parkway West yesterday sometime after 4pm.

metro- where were you last night? you get a report from borgia vs parkway central? Sounds like Coach Kirby had the colts ready and they played their best game of the year on offense. Athletic and quick teams are the kryptonite for a very big physical borgia team. We almost had a quarterfinal matchup between Coach Kirby and the Sodemanns again just like the old days!!!!

I was @ Parkway West for the Vashon-St. Mary's game and it did not disappoint. There were reports of the Sikeston-Hillsboro and Parkway Central-Borgia coming in every few minutes. Parkway Central defeated the Borgia Knights on a foul called on a 3-point shot with under 2 seconds remaining and the score tied. That is tough way to end a season and end a high school career. Parkway Central played in class 5 last year but moved down this year and next. The Colts are a young team and will be playing Jennings this weekend.

The Vashon-St. Mary's game played before a sellout crowd was one of the best ever. This was a heart breaker as well.

That's what I like about Southeast Missouri teams. they still care about their basketball teams. They support their teams not only in playoffs games but during the regular season games. It appears a lot of St. Louis area fans get behind their teams during playoffs but are no where to be found during the regular season.

Coach Kirby is a retired teacher-basketball coach who has always done a good job with his teams past and present. Parkway Central has not won a district since 2003 but the Colts may have something special going with this young group and excited group. .

I'd like to call you out on that, but for the most part you are right. Although basketball is the most popular high school sport in St. Louis, most schools don't get really excited for games, except around the holidays and the playoffs. However, there's plenty of basketball junkies around.

I was at the game last night too and will have the highlights up shortly. Mind you the video is over 18 minutes long because it was such a good game and the atmosphere was electric.

As for this game I can't see how Vashon doesn't win. Although they didn't shoot particulary well for most of the game, they found ways to score by attacking the basket and letting 6'8" forward Joe Reece (picked up a K-State offer last night) go to work and Koray Gilbert as well. They showed how great of a bench they have, in fact McKinney and Stockard combined for five points going into the fourth quarter, but were very much in the game.

If Vashon plays their game, nothing special then they'll win and I think it'll be over 20 points IMO. I can see Sikeston coming out strong early on, but then Vashon will wear them down with their size and athleticism.

How can Vashon lose with the level of talent they have? Their talent on their roster is shocking.

I said I can't see how they don't win or lose. I really think they will win.

That wasn't directed at you. Just saying that they should never lose to anybody with a roster filled with college players. But that's why they play the games. Nobody in their right mind would have thought Chaminade would lose in the semifinals two years ago, but it happened.

Bucket, Joe Reece 6'8" picked up an offer from Kansas State last night. Joe played on Vashon's JV last year but is a star in the making. Tony Irons makes players better. They have two 6'4" freshmen who will be impact players in two year under the direction of Tony Irons.

A lot of coaches make players better. But some of those coaches have players that are 6'8" to work with. Other coaches have players that are 5'8" lol

I'm guessing Irons might not look quite so good with a bunch of 5'8" - 6' players like a lot of coaches have. Lol

Oldround, Tony Irons worked his way thru the " College of the Ozark " in Springfield, Missouri. Tony Irons was @ the right place @ the right time to achieve greatness as a high school basketball coach. Tony is well liked by coaches across Missouri. He is a " Perfect Fit " for the Vashon basketball program. Vashon is a " Traditional school " and rich in talent. We have other schools across Missouri with incoming talent every year and these coaches are considered the elite coaches of Missouri. It is impossible to " Join this elite group of coaches " without incoming talent.

Maybe someone could name the ideal high school where talent rolls in every year.

1. Kickapoo
2. Vashon
3. Sikeston
4. Webster
5. Chaminade
6. CBC
7. Advance ( Small school )
8. Hazelwood Central
9. Borgia
10. Nixa
11. Others

The above schools may have a down year on occasions but in a couple of years they are right back in the mix. Coach in one of the above schools and you will soon join the elite coaches of Missouri. Guaranteed! People will call you by your first name like Tony, Greg, Frank, Dave and Jay.

I think you might be missing the point of some previous replies. Not saying that there aren’t good coaches on your list but “incoming talent” as you say is easier to develop when it moves into your district. I don’t fault coaches for having programs that kids want to play for but lets not get to ahead of ourselves, a lot of very good coaches have to coach the kids that are born and raised thier district

I can tell you that every single one of Sikeston's players are "home grown" meaning they grew up in sikeston, have been enrolled in sikeston since at least 2nd grade and most since kindergarten. So there's no incoming talent and talent isn't "rolling in." It's called player development and building a team. Buying into the system and belief in greatness. You constantly try to undermine the job that Holifield has done and it's pathetic metro-dude. Sikeston was not a traditional basketball power for 60 years until Holifield arrived. Now, by your own post, Sikeston is a "traditonal school" but by your post you're saying ANYBODY would have come in and done what Holifield has done because of the amazing talent they've had. Just another slap in the face. I so wish you had the balls to talk to Holifield face to face and tell him that. But you don't. Oh well.

I have no “dog in the fight” but I do follow high school basketball from STL down to southeast Missouri. MFloyd no need to defend Sikeston anyone who has a clue about high school basketball knows that Coach Holifield has developed a system that is one of the best in the state and it starts with youth basketball and carries on to middle school then high school. Sikeston is unique in that it develops it’s own “home grown” talent as opposed to some schools that tend to develop “incoming talent” from other areas. Missouri high school basketball’s system is what it is, but my personal judgement of how good a program/coach is based on what is accomplished with the kids that its dealt(not the kids they can bring in…). Again I realize kids want to play for a “good” coach or program and that usually comes from hard work of the person in charge.

MFloyd, There you go again. When did I say anyone could come into the Sikeston program and do what Holifield has done? Sikeston had been winning for the past ten years therefore I would say Sikeston has' Traditional " .MFloyd, you continue playing down the talent in the Sikeston school district. I can not understand why you continue stating Sikeston has 5'6" players. Sikeston has Fred Thatch 6'3" one of the best basketball players to ever walk the halls @ Sikeston high school. Trey Jenkins is 6'6" and doing well. The Bulldogs have other varsity players who are in the 6'3"-6'5" range. Sikeston has one of the top guards in Missouri, Kevin Jones. MFloyd, Are you saying Sikeston does not have talent and the success of the Bulldogs is because of the coaching staff? MFloyd, Sikeston has one of the best fan bases in Missouri, Sikeston has some of the top basketball players in Missouri and Sikeston has tradition. These are the ingredient it take to have a good basketball program. MFloyd, you need to give the players @ Sikeston more credit because it take players to be successful.

Sikeston did have a move in a couple of years ago but it did not work out for the Bulldogs but the Sikeston staff gave him ever opportunity.possible. I believe he even started a few game.

Alright MFloyd, What are the Sikeston Bulldogs chances against Vashon this weekend? Vashon Coach Tony Irons is building one of the top resume in Missouri high school basketball. Tony gives credit to his school and players for his success.

metro-dude you are kind of proving MFlody’s point for him on two fronts. First you say, “Sikeston has one of the best fan bases in Missouri.” Yes they do because their players grow up in the town and the community knows and supports them from an early age. Secondly Vashon struggled until Coach Iron’s came on the seen a few years ago and mysteriously a roster of “talent” was found in the district that has led to current success. You say Iron’s gives credit (your words not his) to “his school and players for his success,” yet then you claimVashon Coach Tony Irons is building one of the top resume in Missouri high school basketball.” Pick one... Maybe you should take your own advice and "give the players @Vashon more credit because it take players to be successful"

MFloyd, do you do Holifield's laundry, iron his shirts, shine his shoes and wash his car? Holifield has been in Sikeston for 20 years, there is nothing wrong with giving credit to the fans, having tradition and having good players to be successful. You must think it's a crime to have good players.

It takes players to build a great resume and without players the resume will suffer. We must give Tony Irons credit for the quick turn around @ Vashon after all these players could have enrolled in other school districts like CBC, DeSmet or Chaminade.

Kids today can enroll @ any school district before entering the 9th grade.

You might be misunderstanding MFlody. No doubt he is a Holifield supporter but what he is trying to say is that those good players and teams are a product of these kids being brought up from an early age in the system that Coach Holifield has helped put in place. Let’s just address the elephant in the room and say that “some” programs are a product of “incoming talent” and the people who reap the benefits of that “incoming talent” are not always the ones that develop it.

I have no doubt that all the coaches on your “list” work hard. I’m just speaking from our vantage point. Here is the wording that gives us concern and maybe you aren’t intending for these to come across as they do:

"Coach in one of the above schools and you will soon join the elite coaches of Missouri. Guaranteed!" ----(This would imply that all you have to is be hired and it’s automatic—you win! “Tradition” can only take you so far. As I said, our kids are home grown. We lose far more players than we gain, I assure you)

It is impossible to "Join this elite group of coaches" without incoming talent. (“Incoming Talent”? That would imply that these kids are coming in from other places the way I read it.)

At Sikeston, we love our team. I’m not saying we do not have good kids and good players. But I’m also realistic. The vast majority of our kids are hard-working kids that have bought into being Sikeston Bulldogs and once their high school days are over will never play another second of organized basketball.

We are proud of our team, our players and the job that our Coach does, every year.

The rules are what they are in Missouri high school basketball but in Coach Iron’s first year at Vashon his roster was not filled with all talented 9th graders but talent in all grades…

To most, a good high school coach anyway, develops the players it takes to build a good resume and doesn’t rely on “incoming talent”

The signs to look for in a great is taking " Talent and winning ."

Legend, We all know Sikeston has great players and plays a modest schedule. Can you name a team on the Sikeston schedule who has more talent then the Sikeston Bulldogs other then Chaminade? To me the Sikeston coaching position is one of the top jobs in Missouri because of the fans, school support, tradition, talent and the size of the school and playing in class 4.

Great high school coaches develop talent then win with it. If you want to "get" talent and win with it go coach in college or AAU.

I am not a Sikeston fan only know from playing them in the past and seeing the program from the outside so I don't care who they play.

It's easy to schedule good teams when you know you have a good "incoming talent" from "somewhere" every year.

Well, depends on what you are calling “talent”….In terms of running, jumping, quickness....

1. Blytheville
2. Charleston
3. Charleston, again
4. McCluer
5. Chaminade
6. Whitfield
7. Poplar Bluff
8. Cape Central
9. Miller Career
10. Caruthersville
11. Cape, again

If you consider more pure basketball “talent”, like shooting, skill, etc:

1. Charleston, at least equal, if not better—Clark, Sharp, size all over the place. Quickness.
2. Ft Zumwalt South---I can’t account for their .500 record, but they have talent and shooters and players.
3. Chaminade - Loaded
4. Poplar Bluff—they have a national recruit and 3-4 other very talented players, with size
5. Whitfield—a national recruit with additional players with length and skill
6. Cape, at least equal, although they don’t shoot it well. But more quickness, speed, athleticism
7. Miller Career—just saw them once, but they looked pretty skilled that night and clearly more size, skill, quickness
8. Jackson—in terms of basketball skill, they have plenty of it….2 6’7 kids and 3 shooters on the floor at all times
9. Hillsboro, although, I wouldn’t say ‘better’ skill, but they have some, no doubt, including a 6'8 recruit and lots of size.

Bucket, There is only one team on your list that can compete or defeat Vashon. Comparing scores are not an accurate way of getting results however.

Vashon-------------74
@ Miller Career--61

Sikeston-----------61
@ Miller Career-76

I was trying to come up with a team on the Sikeston schedule that best describes Vashon and that is very difficult. Vashon is 15 points or more points better then anyone on the Bulldogs schedule except Chaminade. Judging from the above, The Sikeston Bulldogs are a huge underdog but I have seen a few underdog teams rise to occasion-beat the odds and celebrate victory but that's rare indeed.

The things I see in Sikeston's favor are.

1. Fan Support
2. More Cheerleaders
3. The Fred and Kevin Jones factor
4.. More experienced coaching staff

Things in Vashon's favor:

1. More athletic
2. Big size advantage
3. Bigger schedule
4. More senior leadership
5. More experience in key position
6. Superior 3-point shooters
7. Superior @ attacking the basket
. Superior defensive pressure in the half court

Even:

1. Multiple defensive full and half court
2. Free Throw shooting
3. The Will to win
4. Crowd control

These two teams played in the semi-finals of class 4 last year. Vashon was up 10 plus points in the 3rd quarter and Sikeston guard Kevin Jones became a man and refused to give up as the Bulldogs took the Woverines into overtime. Vashon won the class 4 state championship the next day. This overtime defeat took a lot out of the young Bulldogs as Jefferson City Helias defeated the Bulldogs in the third place game.

It appears we are back where we started last year ( Except this is the Quarters ) instead of the semi-finals. Sikeston and Vashon

You won't find another team on anybody's schedule in Missouri that boasts the talent of Vashon. Webster Groves. Chaminade. That's about it.
