The St. Louis Public Schools has 3 high school ( Vashon, Soldan and Roosevelt ) These three schools have boundaries and must attend the district they live in however there appears to be an out for students who want to attend one of the other high schools. The other schools are called " Magnet Schools " and have no boundaries. Students can apply to attend a schools outside there district by a certain date each year. The principal @ each of the three high schools can admit students from other districts if space is available.

I believe the Principal @ Vashon will admit all of the basketball players from the closing " Madison Prep" school therefore look for Vashon to a be power this year and future years. Coach Tony Irons and the Vashon principal will make the new Vashon as powerful as the old Vashon and it's all legal. Look for top talent from all over the city to enroll @ Vashon high school.

Is Vashon one of the magnet schools?

Eagle Ball, 3 public high schools ( Vashon, Soldan and Roosevelt ) the other high schools are " Magnet schools ". It appears to me these 3 high schools can enroll students from all over the city if space is available and I'm guessing space will be available @ Vashon for the right students.

Sikeston, Missouri and Scott County Central should consolidate and have open enrollment, students from Sikeston could enroll @ Scott County Central and be eligible without moving. The same thing could happen with Dexter and my ole school Essex-Richland. The Richland Rebels could become a power again to go along with their great academics.

My bad. I read your first post and thought the magnate schools were the only ones that could accept those students outside the attendance zones.

Oldround, I talked with the St. Louis Public Schools Administration office today. Soldan, Vashon and Roosevelt were not reported as Magnet schools. The website in your post may need updated according to the information given to me today.
Well it's the St. Louis Public Schools website. But I wouldn't be surprised at it not being correct. Lol.

How would Richland a become a basketball power again with kids from Dexter who haven't won much of anything in several years except for the girl's team? Why would Sikeston or SCC want to combine their schools? They have both done quite well as they are.

3rfan, you ask tough questions but I'll try to asnwer with an opinion.

Dexter plays in a large class and has trouble competing with the quicker-more athletic teams in their league. I'm sure Dexter has a few players not on their roster and players who did not try out who could make Essex-Richland more competitive among teams in class 1. As a rule, when we add one or two new competitive players to any roster in Missouri high school, the team would be more competitive in the smaller division.

Sikeston has a lot of players who enjoys playing basketball. Some very good players don't play on the Sikeston teams for various reason like ( Don't get along with the coaching staff or their skills levels are below Sikeston's standard ) Scott County Central appears to be a place for players to get a second chance if they can not compete @ Sikeston or just can't go by the tough standards by the coaching staff @ Sikeston. These kids enrolling @ SCC just want to play basketball and can't afford to move so they give an address of one of their friends or relatives. I'm guessing this has not been a problem in the past so why not roll the dice.

One would ask why wouldn't coaches from the SEMO area make a formal complaint to the MSHSAA, I believe it's because nobody wants to hurt a kid's chances to be a high school graduate. Sikeston has a great player name " Fred Thatch ". If Fred Thatch enrolled @ another high school without moving, complaints by the dozens would be sent to the MSHSAA but the players enrolling @ other high schools without moving are not on Fred's level.

When I was coaching @ Richland, we were getting players like Fred Thatch to enroll @ Richland but they were moving to the district. Here are a few names ( Norman Cole, David Simes, Jonnny Sims ). There were other lesser players from Sikeston enrolling @ Richland.

There were two coaches in Semo who made a formal complaint against Essex-Richland back in the 90's. You would never guess or believe who sent this complaints to the MSHSAA? They are still working in SEMO today.

In my opinion High School sports with moving kids in and out of districts to get a championship has become ridiculous. Like the private schools where they get "academic" scholarships to play. The good old days of playing where you grew up and taking pride in playing for your hometown are gone. It is really sad to see. Kid's parents paying tuition money for their kids just to go play a sport at another school to get "noticed" more for college is just beyond me. If you can pay tuition then just play on traveling teams or AAU teams. Especially in basketball if you are good you will get noticed. It's crazy how some parents and coaches are ruining the competitive side, and the school spirit of High School athletics. Just my opinion. Have a great day.
