"Tradition spawned a win ethic as pervasive as the cold November night winds that whipped through the packed stadium, the town throwing its collective support around the team like a cozy blanket. In its post war glory days, the close-knit community of Crystal City was from a slower, warmer time, a place where being a good neighbor meant something, not exactly Mayberry, but close, and high school football was the social glue that bound it all together."

Great read. Its amazing, the transformation over time.
Thank you sir. For sure the game has changed greatly over the past 50 years, but the small town pride that a winning football teams brings has not. It is just the way it is.

As I told Dave in an email, my mom was Crystal City born and raised. The stories he told in this essay made me think I was sitting in my Grandpa's living room with him talking about these teams, players and coaches. The essay brought back LOTS of memories!!

That was great.

I've read lots of articles by the author.

His article on Monroe City in the late 80's, the Michael Washington years, was a great read as well.

His book 'Riding the Storm Out' about Roosevelt HS was another great read. It's more than just a book about football.

Good stuff.
