was pulling 212 cars! I haven't heard any official cause for that derailment but that is a VERY long train. I saw on the video that some of the cars were auto haulers, those things are 90 to 100 feet long themselves. I don't recall seeing any trains with more than 150 cars in my 30+ years working on the track and most were not over 100 cars and had more crew members on the train back then. The longer the train the harder it is to control. When their rolling down the track the train is stretched out, when they start braking if not done properly they have slack action as the cars run together and that can cause all kinds of problems, especially with heavy loads behind empty cars.

That's 3 miles right?
Yikes.
It's almost like they are asking for regulation.

Remember the reaction with the dump truck and the unimproved crossing?

That is harsh revno..... 3RFAN won't like you for that.

I don't how long it was, only some of the cars were the long auto carriers. I don't know what else it was pulling.
Still haven't heard the length of the train but 37 cars derailed. Sounds to me like they need to new braking system on every train so when one car goes off the tracks there won't be so many go with it. This one is out in the woods and no hazardous stuff on it. Those way out in the sticks are really a pain to work on for everyone involved.

So... railroads should spend money on safety related stuff?

No
Oh my...... revno. That's just not fair of you.
Now they say this derailment was caused by a loose wheel that came off. I've never heard of that one before. The maker of these cars says there is about 700 of them out there that could have the same defect. They have car numbers, they should be able to locate them easy enough but it'll be interesting to see how they get them back to the shop to fix the problem if they could cause a derailment on the way back.

Easy peasy, nothing to see here. 80 MPH Amtrak crashes, wheels flying off and chemicals cars exploding are to be expected from our well-ran railroad corporations.
