Just watched this on the MLB network. Really cool look into him. For those of you that remember this...Just how big of a deal was it? They said on the show, the attendance at Tigers' games for Fidrych's 19 home starts that season was almost half of that of all the other 62 games. That's unreal!

He was one different dude but he was definitely an attraction for the game!

Am I the only one that thinks the game could use a few more personalities? All the lynch mobs on social media and the general PC'ness of the nation has sort of beaten it out of guys it seems.

I was 16 and a baseball nut in 76 when the Bird came on the scene. Watching that one hour special was awesome. It was cra cra.
Dude was 19-9 and led the league in ERA making $16,500. And he was proud of his salary... .

I used to be glued to every pitch of the all star game. Maybe it's the overabundance of games, highlights, and info but it has lost some of its lustre.

Interleague play and loads of playoff games doesn't help either

I'd say it's the computer nerds that use mythical stats to evaluate players, that have taken some of the luster out of it.

I'd say that has nothing to do with it. It's the old geezers that like to scream get off my lawn

Case and point.....Goose Gossage

When they change the rules to require two infielders on both sides of second base, goose will have his revenge. I can't wait.

If a professional hitter can't hit against a shift......or bunt....

Maybe they need to find a new professional career

How exciting!!! Having your big slugger bunt!!??!! Yippee. That's what I buy tickets for!!!!

I just love it when someone hits a routine ground ball to short or second and there is no one there and you see the pitchers head almost explode. See John Lackey.

Rizzo bunted....twice....against STL

Guess who quit shifting on Rizzo?

Thats all it takes to break a shift. Hit it in the gap. And most professional hitters just keep swinging right into it. How is that the problem of the shift? If you're too ignorant to punch a ball to the oppo gap....you deserve to ground out 5 times per game

Like Heyward? Haha
The shift sucks man.

He's coming around. Not really all that concerned. His defense is more than enough help for the Cubs, while the offensive sluggers are still on rookie deals for pretty much the life of his contract.

It all evens out

I tend to agree with you and NM on this. I remember anxiously awaiting the P-D every Sunday to pour over the stats of players from every team. I'd spend hours reading over them. Now, just a quick click to Baseball Reference and I'm good. Add in I went from having one Birds game/week, to all the Cubs/Braves/Mets/Yankees games (when we first got old school satellite), to having virtually every Birds game, to the advent of inter league...it just all kind of lessens the 'wow, this is so new and awesome' factor. But I like the exposure to it all as a fan. And I think, to a large degree, age plays a factor as well.

I just don't see it. All part of the strategy if you ask me. I'm with Cards here, if you don't bunt or take a ball the other way every once in a while...you deserve what you get against the shift. Should be the hitters job to adjust.

The instant info world today takes a lot of luster off I think. I don't have to waste 3 hours anymore. I get instant updates on my phone and can quickly go watch the plays I want to. I used to at least listen to every game. I don't even do that anymore. I can multi-task and not miss anything. My kids do that same thing. They all keep up with the games but don't sit and watch or listen to every inning. The playoffs are a different story. We don't miss much then but the regular season is so long just a quick score update is enough most nights.
