Tarkio College applies for state certification

I thought they won a national championship in football in the 80s running the wishbone.

The Tarkio College Owls won a national championship? I’m not saying that they didn’t, but it’s news to me if they did, but hell, I was there in 90s and some of the new millennium so yeah

Were you and Marco Rubio teammates?

Where Marco Rubio’s football dreams went to die: More of a joke than a jock, Rubio was only recruited out of desperation

I didn’t play there or even attend the college. I believe the college folded in 1991 or somewhere around there.

Tarkio Academy was there for awhile after the college closed. But they were horrible at football. Was a school of basically Juvenile jail for troubled teens across the state.

That is correct. I believe that Tarkio Academy did have a basketball player that was a D-1 recruit one year if I’m correct. Held offers from Michigan, Marquette, and I’m sure there were others. Idk if he ever ended up signing anywhere.

The only thing they "won" was a stop at McDonald's on their way back home from LIberty, MO, after William Jewell would beat them by 40 points in football in the 1970s and 1980s. I thought Tarkio closed down?

They did in 1991 I believe. They’re trying to reopen as a technical college. These foreign companies have been putting more and more wind turbines in around Atchison County every year. The last few years in particular they’ve been adding more and more around Tarkio and Westboro, so I’m assuming that they’ll have some kind of a co-op trade program offered there as well as other courses.

I meant they did as in, they closed the doors in 1991 I believe. Something to do with fraud of financial aid or what not, was tied to whoever the dean or president of the university was at that time I’m pretty sure.

I belive Tarkio participated in the NAIA Heart of America Athletic Conference while I was in school at another member school.

No memories of their football team, but I do remember their basketball team visiting my school. Seems like they were decent.

Yes, they were NAIA and were part of the Heart of America to my knowledge. As far as the skill of their athletic teams, I have no clue.

A friend of mine went there on a basketball scholarship in the middle 80's. I don't remember if they were any good.

They were the college football equivalent of playing Springfield Central.

I remember Tarkio football team's very well. They were more competitive in Basketball than other sports.

It was tough for them to gain traction in football by competing against ( rich donors) William Jewell, Baker and (not rich donor) Missouri Valley. Tarkio had some good players just not enough of them. I think, can't remember for sure but Chip Sherman HOF coach of Platte County lore was a tailback?

In the era I remember most, they were in ball games versus Culver, Central Methodist, and Graceland. This was before Evangel, Benedictine (independent noncon at that time) or Mid America Nazarene ( started football in 81).

It was rumored that Tarkio was run into the ground by Spellman, an unscrupulous president that went on to build up schools like Missouri Valley and what is now Lindenwood.

The basic blueprint of these schools like Missouri Valley and early Lindenwood that have survived financially was to recruit in as many players as possible, provide scholarships (lol) based on financial need and collect the government subsidies. The entrance requirement for eligibility was at least 16 on the ACT, the top half of the graduating class and a 2.0. Any two of the three requirements made athletic eligibility a cinch. The poorer the student the better.

It's unclear to me why Tarkio wasn't able to survive financially. A bunch of competition I guess, not to mention the Kansas Conference of Bethany, Ottawa, Friends, Sterling etc.. seemed to recruit some good players too.

A famous Tarkio alum is Senator Marc Rubio.

Graceland's most famous and perhaps the most famous we remember today that competed in HAAC is Bruce Jenner.
