Tigers Take Summer Workouts to a New Level
Mizzou Wrestling Summer Update
June 5, 2014
While offseason practices have been underway for a couple months for the Mizzou wrestling, the Tigers brought things to a whole new level by competing in several summer competitions. Mizzou kicked things off with a group of 10 Tigers competing at the 2014 ASICS University Freestyle National Championships in Akron, Ohio, May 22-25.
Of the 10 grapplers competing, three finished among the top eight. In the 65kg weight class, the seventh-place match came down to two Mizzou wrestlers. Ultimately, Robbie Mathers defeated Lavion Mayes, 11-0, after Mayes defeated him earlier in the competition 12-10. J'den Cox, in the 97kg weight class, took third place after losing to Lucas Sheridan in the semifinal match and coming back to win his next two matches.
Also at the competition for the Tigers were Barlow McGhee (57kg), Zach Synon (61kg), Ty Prazma (74kg), Devin Mellon (125kg), and Mikey England, Matt Lemanowicz, and Parker Von Egidy, all at 80kg.
The following weekend, Cox competed at the 2014 U.S. World Team Trials in Madison, Wis. The competition was the first of two phases designed to determine who will represent the United States at this fall's World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Cox, competing in his first World Team Trials coming off of his National Championship win at 197 pounds, won his first two matches, including an 8-0 shutout of Army's Jack Jensen. Despite another 5-0 win over Wynn Michalak, Cox lost in the semifinals and consolation semifinals to Deron Winn (10-2) and J.D. Bergman (4-2), respectively.
Currently, the Missouri team is gearing up for its annual Tiger Style Camp, starting this coming Sunday, June 8. Each camp is designed for high school students and teams looking to reach their goals through summertime competition and training in an elite setting.
