Good article looking at called balls and strikes. Carp had 294 strikes called that were out of the zone. 210 of them low and away where you have no chance to hit.

Looking at this analysis pitchers shouldn't complain to much about umpiring. 1 out 3 called strikes are out of the zone. MLB really needs to take steps to improve this. Especially now with the unlimited technology. It's making them look bad. As the article states, umps set up on the inside of catchers and they can't see that low and away corner. It's even worse when the catcher moves inside too. I've seen pitches where the ump was over behind the batters box. I suppose they're trying to get a better view of up or down. I'm not 100% but I think I'd like to see them line up directly behind the plate even if they have to be a little higher to see over the catcher. That should allow getting in/out more accurate. I'd think that would be more fair to hitters. There might be more low pitches missed but those aren't as hard to deal with as ones way outside that they can't even reach. I'd at least like to see it experimented with to see how it went.

Hitting a moving baseball is hard enough by itself. Having to worry about pitches out of the legal zone just makes it that much tougher. If they want to see more action balls and strikes need to be called more accurately. Force pitchers to thrwo actual strikes. Would Gregg Maddux be in the hall if all those pitches off the plate had been called correctly?

Just something to talk about while nothing else is going on.

Maddux and Glavine both made a living throwing 4" to 6" off the outside corner. Guys had to swing at them or be called out then they either missed or hit weak ground balls somewhere. That BS about hitting their spot makes me so mad. What difference does it make if you can hit a spot that ain't in the zone? Make them at least get close. It drove me crazy at the time and now the umps setting up so far inside drives me crazy too. If the catcher is in that far they would get a much better look by being over the other shoulder.

Hadn't seen that.

I thought it was interesting to see actual numbers with Card hitters. 35% called wrong seems crazy to me.

The high strike didn't used to get called so much but they seem to have gotten better on it. I'm not sure what affects hitters the worst, the high strike being called or those low and out pitches that they can't reach. I'd guess the outside and low ones. You at least have a chance to foul off a high pitch. But if you can't even reach it you have little chance.

Early last season Carp was getting frustrated as hell getting called out on that outside pitch. That was the single reason he got off to such a slow start. His eye didn't suddenly get worse from 2013.

I'm still dreaming of the day when all umps are replaced by technology.

Unquestionably the low and outside strike is worse for hitters; it's a lot harder to do anything with a pitch at the bottom of your knees that is 2 inches off the plate.
