Lots of people “back in the day” looked at the National Guard as an easy part time job. That all changed in the 2000’s when units were Activated and sent on actual deployments at much higher rates.

Walz put in his paperwork in Feb 2005, retirement was set for May 2005. His unit did not receive the deployment alert until July 2005. He did receive notice in March 2005 AFTER filing paperwork to run for congress that his unit would possibly be deployed within the next 2 years. His unit minus Walz eventually deployed in March 2006.

He met the qualifications to be that rank. Once he earns the rank he must attend an academy to stay at that level. He did not finish the academy so he was dropped back down.

Master Sergeants don't grow on trees. It takes a totally dedicated soldier to make this rank. Walz served in artillery. Late in his career, he had surgery to try and correct his hearing (tinnitus) and retired shortly after. Thank you for 24 years of service.

Umm…I don’t want to butt in, but I don’t think he supports the current Republican Party. Also, I’d say what party members in the 1800s thought probably isn’t relevant now, but you knew that already.
My 2 cents - Walz served over 20 years, if he retired early or was avoiding deployment, who cares. He put his time in and should have left whenever he wanted to, no questions asked. Same with his DUI, might sound insensitive but who cares; luckily nobody was hurt. Millions of folks drink and drive and just don't get caught.
