This true. Why was Goldy going off 3rd on contact with NO outs? Had he not done that the fly ball would would have scored him from 3rd. Next question is why was the catcher allowed to stick his leg out and leave no lane to the plate? He did it well before he had possession of the ball.Something I have noticed about the Cardinals is that right now they arent very good at baseball.
So what is the coaching staff doing to cause Goldy's regression?Goold opened my eyes a little to something on Twitter the other day. Tweet turned into how Mo seemed to be getting fleeced on deals lately. Even the Goldy deal isn't looking so good now, with Weaver throwing well (injured right now) and Kelly coming into his own. Certainly didn't get the better of Pham, Voit, Piscotty, or Grichuck deals. Maybe won the Ozuna deal. Signings have virtually flopped at every turn...Cecil, Holland, Fowler. We could be here all day with that list...BUT...what opened my eyes...Goold made a statement about guys struggling with the Birds, then going elsewhere and getting it figured out. Or guys coming here, hitting a slide, and not really coming out of it. Seems like a legitimate point. Said that's what got Matheny and staff in big trouble. Somewhat insinuated the problem remains now with the new staff. I'm not sure I completely agree, although I can certainly see what he's talking about.
It wasn't necessarily an all-encompassing statement...but moreso...major leaguers do their thing for the most part. Especially the good ones. When they hit a skid, they need help. The staffs haven't exactly been known for pulling guys through or out of those situations. It made sense to me, to a degree. So what is the coaching staff doing to cause Goldy's regression?
We haven't had consistent offense since Big Mac was hitting coach. I was never really a fan of Mabry's work. All I know about Albert is from reading he's a modern day coach. I assume that means a lot of analytics. It wasn't necessarily an all-encompassing statement...but moreso...major leaguers do their thing for the most part. Especially the good ones. We really, really did. And I agree, there were some studs during those days. I just never remember the really good players going through so many extended rough patches like these guys seem to do. Maybe it's revisionist thinking. We got spoiled with TLR, DD and Big Mac. But you have to factor in the players they had too. I'm pretty sure you and I could have coached Pujols. I can say nice job and pat you on the butt as well as anyone.
Yeah it's hard to remember that stuff. But Pujols had a way of covering up a lot. Did he ever have a slump??We really, really did. And I agree, there were some studs during those days. First time I saw Albert he was playing SS for Maplewoods Juco at 3R. I didn't know much of anything about him, just heard he could hit. I guess that was the understatement of the year! Wonder if we'll ever find out how old he is?Yeah it's hard to remember that stuff. But Pujols had a way of covering up a lot. Did he ever have a slump??
I think we were expecting similar results from Goldy. He hasn't done it. Dude only has 17 XBH, in the second week of June. His last 7 year average would be close to 30 by now. 2Bs are the most alarming. He only has 5. He had 33 or more each of those years. Maybe he just needs better coaching.
Extra: I had to Google Pujols slumps. Found this from 2011. Once a year he'd struggle for 8-10 games. Then back to normal. Some good stuff in here that you'll enjoy. 401 players were drafted ahead of Albert. How did so many teams miss on someone who would become one of the best ever?? Also a Booches ref and some farm hands we've come to know well. Unfortunately they're still trying to replace Oscar Taveras.

There is a certain technique one must use when patting a player on the butt. So be careful! We haven't had consistent offense since Big Mac was hitting coach. I was never really a fan of Mabry's work. As bad as the pitching is, I think the offense is worse. Dejong has come back to his norm. Fowler full on sucks again, like he's back to being right around the worst everyday player in baseball again. Marp isn't marp'ing at all. Or maybe he is. And somehow, one of the best hitters on the team has about 75-100 PAs less than he should. It's mind-boggling...Add to that, Hudson and Wacha make "great" starts vs the Fish. Great, we get to watch those two throw some more BP to actual major league teams.Pitching all fixed guys. We beat Miami 2 times.
