Steve Spurrier retires

When to his camp in 1998. The dude had his shirt off running drills the whole camp in 95 degree heat, unlike almost every other division one coach I have ever encountered.

He was very willing to share ideas. Been rooting for his teams ever since.

"I'm one of the few coaches who had success as a player," he said. "I did win the Heisman, you know."

Yeah, we know, Steve. That's part of what we're going to miss about you. You were at your best when you were winning -- flaming Phil Fulmer, Florida State, the media, whoever happened to be close. That's how we knew that he knew his team was good. LOL

Character? He quit in the middle of the season!
The man is 70 years old, accomplished everything he can and wanted to retire after last season but they talked him into staying. You know when your heart is not in it and it is not fair to the kids. anything wrong with him walking away now.

Right or wrong, he was an "old school coach" who was extremely good at what he did. He made a very positive impact on the college game. He will be missed...

It's a shame he couldn't go out on a "W" and ride on the ol'shoulders. I am going to miss FSU owning him.

He was a great one. And he didn't cheat or cultivate the criminal element like others in the state of Florida or Urban Meyer.

Quitting now is actually helpful with regard to getting someone in place as soon as the season ends to hit the recruiting trail.

Duck wouldn't it have been just as helpful if he had just announced now that he would be retiring at the end of the year and just stayed on to finish what he started? I mean he could have just started to let his assistants handle things and he could have stepped back some. I just find it funny that if a young coach would leave a team like this you guys would fry the guy. I think what he did was terrible don't care the age, my dad always taught me you finish what you start end of story. He should have finished this year you don't preach to your players not to quit then turn around and quit.

Now I will say this it just seems odd about the timing?? anybody else think it is fishy? I hope he is going out on his own terms and healthy, I sure hope we don't find out in a few months he was forced out or had to step down because of health issues...

IDK and can only speculate, guess or read between the lines. HBC is tired and among other things I couldn't imagine not knowing, he couldn't relate to sissy player's that self diagnose and sit out games. He's tired of losing when he thinks he should win and most of all tired of the crap. If I were 70, had accomplished what he has, had accumuliated his wealth, I would've hung it up a long time ago. At least he didn't hang on too long as did Paterno and Bowden. The timing may be wrong to outsiders, but if you're a D-1 football coach, there's not a whole lot of difference between in season and off-season, and when the in-season is no longer fun, then quit.

OBC is a legend. Florida and USC were nothing until he came to town. CFB is losing a great coach.

agree, probably would have been better to wait until the end of the season, but if his heart was not into it... How many coaches have we seen stay too long, and in reality were just figureheads in the end?

When in the hell did FSU ever own him? He was 5-8-1 against them. He also took over the program in1990 that came off 2 probations. Good lord Kenny. Know what the hell your talking about. Hell he beat there ass for the national title and stopped the undeafted Semilnoles from going to the national title the nxt yr with a 2 system qb. One being Doug Johnson. He coached 11 yrs against them in the and took over a dumpster fire. Hardly think 5-8-1 is getting owned. Same ol Kenny 10 yrs later.

Go to bed.

5-9-1 is his record vs FSU. I'd call that owning him.

Still an idiot I see. You may call that owning him but alot of others dont. He won 4 more freaking games. Like i said but as usual you don't comprehend. Spurrier took over a team that was on probabtion TWICE. Bowden had a power house going. I sure as hell hope Bowden won. Once Spurrier had his team in place he rolled there ass in the national title game and then beat them to cost them the national title w a 2 qb system the nxt year. They were number 1 and Florida wasnt even ranked. Seriously Kenny just stop.
