Ste Genevieve Volleyball Coach Dennis Drumm is retiring at the completion of this volleyball season wrapping up a coaching career that has lasted 35 years.
Coach Drumm began his career in 1979 and amassed a career record of 567-325-44 at four schools (Zalma, McAuley Cathoiic - Joplin, Sarcoxie, and Ste Genevieve). At his almamater, Ste Genevieve, he went 334-185-41. Included were numerous tournament titles, conference championships, state playoff appearances and two Final 4 trips with Sarcoxie and Ste Genevieve 2008.
Ste Genevieve wraps up its season Wednesday in the MAAA tournament and will begin 3A district play next Monday (both at Park Hills).
I think most people would admit that coaching the games is the easy part - In season practices, summer volleyball, fielding phone calls, and agonizing over near loses only adds to the accomplishment of coaching 35 years.
I know Coach Drumm would just as soon play out the year and ride off into the sunset without any fanfare, like he did on win 500, but I wanted to at least give him some well deserved attention on his accomplishment.
So congratulations Coach Drumm on a great career and enjoy retirement. Ste Genevieve Volleyball will miss you!
*** I took a lot of the numbers from an inseason article on win 500 in our local newspaper and added about 3.5 seasons worth of data. Apologies if the numbers aren't spot on but they are surely close.
