Annually one of the best leagues in the Show-Me State top to
bottom Suburban South foes will face a new league opponent in the 2010 season.
The Eureka Wildcats depart the league moving to the Suburban West, while the
Kirkwood Pioneers a familiar foe for many clubs will join the Suburban South
Conference.
Defending Class 5 Show-Me Bowl champion Webster Groves enters
as the favorite to repeat as league champions with several question marks.
Suburban South Pre-Season Conference Notes:
1. Webster Groves-- The Statesmen return as
Show-Me champions for the second time during the Cliff Ice tenure.
Suburban South defensive player of the year Jason Meehan(6-2
225) returns at linebacker and tight end. Senior Marquis Clemons(5-11
180) will take all the snaps this season at quarterback.
Webster returns five offensive starters in their gun-spread
attack and six defensive starters in a 4-3 scheme. Other talented
Statesmen include senior offensive tackle Jackson Roberts(6-7
285), senior running back/LB Aaron Daniels(6-0 205), senior running back
Tae Scanlon(5-10 185) and "Miracle at Moss" wideout Demetrius
Robinson a 6-foot-3 inch, 185-pound junior.
2. Parkway North--The Vikings will return
plenty of familiar faces (6 on offense, 5 on defense) from their 11-2 squad.
The addition of senior offensive tackle Montae Jones(6-3 320)
will provide a huge lift to the offense. Senior Jacob Stone
(6-4 240) is a rock at defensive tackle along with fellow senior defensive
tackle Carl Miller(6-3 300).
Senior Culver Plant(6-3 190) returns at
quarterback after passing for 821-yards as a junior. James Hawkins(5-10
170) hopes to fill the void with the departure of Jaimee Buchanan at running
back, he rushed for 387 yards and 7 touchdowns last season.
3. Kirkwood-- The biggest change with the
2010 Pioneer football team other than the move to the Suburban South is the
hiring of former assistant Matt Irvin who returns from Chicago
to lead the program. Irvin had great success at MICDS after serving as a
Pioneer assistant.
While the line remains a question mark for the Pioneers, Sam Wright
could return at quarterback after passing for 1700 yards and 11 touchdowns last
season. Stalwarts on defense, Trey Clay (6-0 185) and
Kevin Bedford (5-9 180) return at linebacker after leading the
team in tackles.
4. Parkway Central--"With 6 returners on
offense and 6 on defense we look to have a very good year", commented head coach
Mark Goldenberg as he prepared for the 2010 season. Big play junior wide
receiver Brandon Sheperd (6-2 180) returns after compiling
506-yards and 5 touchdowns last season. Matt Robinson(6-1 170) gained
valuable experience at quarterback. The output from talented running back Lee
Ward must be replaced.
5. Parkway West-- "Coming off a 4-6 season, the Longhorns
return 3 starters on both sides of the football", commented head coach
Jeff Duncan. "We will be young but
return a core group of 7 sophomores who started for us this past year.
Our goal is to make improve each week and create a tough, disciplined
team that can compete each week in a very tough conference and district.
"
6.
Summit-- The Falcons finished 3-8 a season ago advancing to the opening
round of the playoffs. Senior quarterback Myles Robinson returns after passing
for nearly 1,000 yards a season ago.
7. University City-- Senior running
back Branden Walker returns after rushing for 1,127-yards and 7
touchdowns a season ago. Robert Battle takes over as head
coach of the Lions football program with the departure of Duane Hawthorne to
Kirkwood.
8. Seckman-- The Jags return to the
South after competing in the Mississippi Area football conference. A
candidate for top rushing honors will be senior Tyler Fisher
who rushed for 1,966-yards and 26 touchdowns a season ago. Seckman will
also rely on senior quarterback Sam Tramel, a 1,610-yard
passer. Tramel tossed 15 touchdown passes in 2009.
