St Joe Benton

There was a bond issue that did not pass last week. Since it did not the School Board will move forward with closing Benton and going to a 2 high school model with Central and Lafayette starting in the fall of 2026. Had to make sure he had a job.

Isn't that going to overpopulate the schools?

Yes it will. The School Board does not care. There is not enough time to go over the complete shit show that is this district now. Lets put 3000 kids in two 100 year old schools. Makes sense. Central is the 2nd oldest school in Missouri. We want to build something new and the short sided people of St Joseph just don't want to change anything.

That is extremely sad for everyone involved.

So these 2 schools will be in the top class in every sport?

It would be close. I was told it would make 2 class 5 schools for girls basketball. Just what I was told by those in the know.

9–12 Enrollment for Central was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1450-1500 I believe.
Benton was somewhere around 900-1000
Lafayette was somewhere around 650ish?

So we’re talking 3,000 students roughly and 2 schools. And it may not be an even dispersal because I highly doubt Lafayette can handle double their enrollment in their buildings unless something drastic changes.

Lafayette may have been 700+. I’m just spitballing, haven’t actually looked it up but Central has been Class 5 in football for awhile and Benton has been a mainstay in Class 4 even with the class changes and Lafayette has been a fringe Class3/4 for football. I know this is basketball board, but it’s easier for me to figure out enrollment based off of football classification.

You also have to figure in the people that are going to leave. Head to one of the 2 private schools, try to get into Savannah or Mid-Buch. Talked to many that are going to sell their house and move to Platte County or Liberty. I know mine will go one of those routes.
