St. Charles vs. Bolivar preview

55 years ago, as of March 5th, Troy lost to Bolivar in the championship of Class M at old Brewer Fieldhouse. I was fortunate to be a part of that Troy team. Charlie Henke and ______ Scott, two Mizzou players, were our hosts. If you were never in old Brewer, the track ran under the bleachers on one side and the floor was raised so there were barriers on each end so the players would not fall off.

I played a lot of ball in Brewer in college......by then it had a carpet floor. I always wished I could have seen a basketball game in Brewer and a baseball game in Sportsmans Park.

I have seen many basketball games in Brewer, and games in Sportsmans Park. Come on Coach you don't want to be as old as I am!!!

I think the last game I saw in old Brewer was Dixon vs Oran. John Brown played for Dixon. Gene Bess was the coach at Oran. One of the officials in the game later made a name for himself in the NFL. The game was later a subject of a Chaney book about the beginning of an era. That was the first year of the 10 second rule at the free throw line. Late in the game. A key call was made against an Oran player. It was the 10 second violation. I have only seen it called twice. One in the district final that year and in the championship game that year. The Oran player that it was called on later made a name for him as a girl's basketball coach. I saw several games at Sportsmans park. I loved the short porch in right field. I even played a Khoury league all-star game there one year.

Since that state tourney was in 1969 my parents need to start earlier....like Bryan Adams sings...I was born in the "summer of 1969", as important as the Moon landing...right???
