Spoonhour to West Plains

You know this for a fact? Sounds like you have a lot of good inside information.

Grey3dog, I think it sounds more like EWING is full of wind. I'll have to admit that it's something that I might find desirable if the addition of Mr. Show-Me Basketball doesn't bring more improvement, but I still think it is only wild speculation on EWING'S part.

I have heard that Steve Hunter is a candidate for the job. He would be much better than Spoonhour anyway. I still remember when Spoonhour got a spot on Pittsburgh State's basketball team. He did not have the ability to play there but because the coach (Coach Hill, I believe) was a former assistant of Charlie Spoonhour's, a roster spot was made available. I think he actually lasted an entire season. I don't see SMSU-WP hiring Spoonhour unless his dad is part of the deal. But considering that his dad has been the avenue for most of "little spoon's" life opportunities, it would not surprise me.

Jay won a Nat'l Championship at Wabash Valley so I think he may be able to coach a bit.

acacia club road, you imply in your post that Jay Spoonhour isn't capable of being a good coach merely because he wasn't a really good player. That is total hogwash. There have been many fine coaches over the years that were not particularly great college players. The winningest coach of all time, Gene Bess, comes to mind. I'm not even sure he played college ball, much less starred on the college level. Charlie Spoonhour himself was not a great player. So your logic just doesn't wash. Besides that as one poster has already mentioned Jay already has a national tournament championship to his credit. Spoonie was not at his side either.

I was not implying that he would not be a good coach because he wasn't a good player. I was implying that, because he was not a good player, he never should have been able to take a roster spot away from someone at Pitt State simply because of who his dad was. I was also implying that he is not as good a coach as Hunter. Also, UNLV could have signed him at a discount rate had they wanted to keep him. They did not do that for some reason.

Sorry I misunderstood you Acacia. Since the subject was coaching I had no other way to intepret your remarks concerning his playing at Pittsburg State because he was Charlie's son. That has no relevancy concerning the coaching position. I would agree with you that Coach Hunter would be a very good one for the position. I don't think they'll have any problem getting some very good applicants for that position. I think GRIZZLY PROUD is overly pessimistic about the future of Grizzly basketball. With the tradition that they have established they will continue to do well. As far as people losing interest in the program I think basketball is greater than Coach Barr. As much as they might miss him early good basketball will influence them to continue being Grizzly fans.

I agree with you that I think the program will remain pretty strong. It has quite a bit of community support. If Spoonhour is hired and does a nice job more power to him. Whoever gets the job will have some tough shoes to fill.
