Smithville 9-2 Vs Kearney 10-0 Championship, Rivalry and rematch (Next) week

Kearney had two starting corners out in that game against Park Hill. They are back now. SV will suddenly go Air Coryell with the Beaver's breathing down their QB's neck? Reminder, they got 19 yards passing in Game 1. Gave up a Pick 6. QB rating was like 15.
Nine weeks can change a lot plus I tend to like teams like Kearney was a year ago coming from off the pace. That being said I still just cannot find any way SVille wins without winning the turnover margin in a huge way AGAIN if this game even happens.

I think Smithville routes Savanah. What I will be curious about is when SV runs those plays that work all year and they stop working, quickly. Can they throw the ball for more than 15 yards? That’s where I don’t think they can. It’s 99.9% V. .01 rd3 mathematically

I think we got the point the first 3 times you posted this thought.

On one hand, it's unfortunate these two programs are in the same district every year. On the other hand, it makes for a great rivalry rematch.

It's obvious both teams have functioning weight rooms and the kids apparently use them.

Both teams are coached at a significantly higher level than most of their class 4 brethren.

Both have had key injuries, like every other HS team in America.

Both have great community support.

Both have moms, but of varying levels of attractiveness.

All adds up to what HS football is all about in KC/NWMO. Looking forward to it.

Platte County is pretty much the same. Hwy 92 having THREE programs like this is unreal.

Every year is different. I’m surprised this is even a conversation. It shouldn’t be. Unless the 2021 Smithville team has eligibility left, Kearney rolls. Talking about the past couple of years is not relevant. Different players, different outcomes. It’s not the X’s and O’s, it’s the Jimmy and Joes.
Coaching changes are a big part of the flip between these two as well. No offense to Speer at all he is just getting started that is how elite Ambroson was (now is at Jewell doing a fantastic job year 1 there BTW)..............

You heard it here folks, the dead speak. Arisen from November 10, 2023. The great oracle of irony. Speaking truth.

I have watched Ambroson's teams from the time he took over a moribund football program at Moberly. He raised it from the ashes by treating every Friday night as a learning opportunity. I always enjoyed listening to his comments on KRES radio every Friday night as I drove home from whatever game I had attended. He never made excuses for their shortcomings and was always complimentary of the things his kids did well and promised improvement in the areas they didn't measure up in. It was a slow build but I admired his dedication to his mission. I knew Smithville had struck gold when I heard they had hired him. But, Top, I'm still amazed at how competitive he has the Jewell program in such a short time. Happy for him and Jewell!

"You all knew that I would have a post about the Smithville vs Kearney game this last Friday, but I waited a bit to decide what to post. Instead of running my mouth and saying that Smithville would be a shoe-in as state champs because they have track speed, I admitted that we had a lot of new starters. On paper, Kearney was certainly one of the favorites going into the season this year. Now that we are three weeks into the season, they are trying to recover from injuries and Joey "Super Fan" is making all sorts of excuses. There is no doubt that Kearney has a ton of talent. However, the days of Tommy Saunders and Brock Christopher are over. We are now in a new era where Smithville is the "big brother" and Kearney is the little "brother". The big reason for the change is the change in culture for the Smithville football program from the youth organization to the High School coaches. As long as Smithville continues to keep the current coaching staff they currently have in place, you will continue to see Smithville win these match-ups even when Kearney has superior talent. In years like 2020 through 2022 where Smithville had superior talent and coaching, you will see auto-clock victories like we have seen in the recent past. I know there are several Kearney fans on here that post, and I appreciate their perspective. However, we have to hear from Joey time and time again just to hear excuses about turnovers and 100M dash times. Someday Kearney may be back on top, but by that time they may be class 5, and their window to win a state championship at class 4 will be over. With all the other talented teams at class 5, I don't see Kearney beating teams like Webb City, St. Mary's or Cardinal Ritter. Better hope some other schools start offering Smithville coaches high paying positions, or Coach Ambroson moves on to college. Until that happens, we can get used to the type of results we saw last Friday."

I guess he didn't pay attention to home many key starters for Kearney were out of the game. He found out in November. But I was "just making excuses," right? Now he is all about Jimmy's and Joes. Bahaha

Coach Ambroson is one of the best in the business. However, there are only four or five teams in each class that have the athletes to win a state championship. That is where the coaching staff comes into play. It is about the players, and coach Ambroson had the ability to get the best athletes in the school playing football.

I normally don't follow that level of College FB but yes he is already doing amazing. He is one of the most well spoken HCs I've ever heard, too. Definitely on par with the current MICDS coach our old familiar Dr. Fred B.

Joey stop quoting your owns posts.
You are one pathetic loser.

Smithville might want to concentrate on Savannah before they worry about Kearney.

Good point. Smithville lines are better. The Savannah team might not be quite be as good as Oak Park (SV beat 18-10), but certainly better than the Pittsburg team SV beat 35-21. I 'm not sure about blowouts here.

Wash, rinse, repeat here we go again: This is the SEVENTH straight year these two have played twice but just the third since the new Sheriff arrived in KTown. Last year was close for about one half of the first quarter then Kearney completely dominated from then on, something I expect this go around.

FACTORS FAVORING SMITHVILLE:

1) Since the Warriors joined the Suburban Blue in 2018 they have been to FOUR final fours and won ONE championship three years ago PLUS have not been eliminated by a public school any of those runs. In other words this is now one of Missouri's ELITE HSFB programs and that will be extremely difficult for Kearney to overcome Friday.

2) HC spears probably has assembled the best staff in the KC Metro, leaving most of his vets intact from Coach As exit (a major, major mouthful) and their experience will pay off in key moments in any game.

3) The confidence factor. Smithville is 10-3vs. Kearney since the aforementioned joining the Sub Blue. I sincerely doubt anyone over that way believes that trend will change any time soon.

4.) If Smithville didn’t throw a pick 6 and bleed out on special teams the first game of the year it could have been a completely different game…

5.)The blowout rematch factor. I warn, warn and warn about this every season and many times it verifies. Even the elite teams tend to drop just a smidge when rematching a team they either blew away the season prior or earlier in the same one. Minnick won't be able to sell the "us vs. the World underdog" narrative this time around.

FACTORS FAVORING KEARNEY:

1.) Eye test, Kearney’s team looks like they live in the weight room. Serious explosion coming off these kids all over the field. State record Javelin thrower Theo Grace, state champion thrower Ty Smith, 400lb bench, 365 Clean beaver twins. Speed and toughness everywhere and these guys look hungry

2.) All around athleticism. This program is definitely on the upswing and not just at the aforementioned Senior level. The RB corps is deep and talented so are the D Linemen and LBs and everyone knows about their prowess in other sports (please no Joey comments, thanks!). The DBs and WRs look legit and they’re spreading the ball everywhere.

3.) Championship offense that can run everywhere all game and we haven’t seen half of minnicks tricks yet. Minnick wastes your time getting you to prepare for bulsht and then just runs it down your throat and that’s a problem.

4.) since #8 has been out Kearney has had kids step up all over the offense. 17, 5 and their TE look to be able to play and they can ram 6 and 24 down your throat and are going to be able to throw it over the top to 8 and 19 come playoff times!

So given all those items what are the concerns I've seen this year you ask? Here are a couple key ones:

Smithville is not playing nearly as well this year as the past three years. I am particularly concerned about their ability to play special teams, throw the ball and overall offensive toughness. This showed itself vs. Platte city in particular, a game Sville quit. I also think their offense is intimidated by the Beavers and Theo. Those guys bullied Smithville all game and got better throughout the year. Smithville is not playing the same Kearney team they played week 3.

Kearneys QB has shown at times he’s incapable of completing a screen pass. He threw an INT on his first throw vs Wtonka. The weak side end (47)on Kearney is a liability that I would run at every play until he stops the run. He’s lost containment on almost every snap this season his side and ends up 10 yards downfield anytime they run at him. He looks like he can’t wait to quit and I would punish him until he does.

OVERALL SYNOPSIS: My expectations going into this game are polar opposite of last year when I all but knew Sville had awakened the purple monster in the regular season and they would have to match an extreme energy level to have a chance. Next Friday I expect Sville to know it’s over before it starts, wouldn’t surprise me if some of their guys quit before the game and focus on baseball early in game that could actually resemble, score wise, the Smithville-Platte County beatdown from which the Warriors quit. As posted earlier my heart says Smithville will keep it close but my head says Kearney slaughters the sickly, sheep and moves on to state. Kearney 49 - Smithville 0

Minnick sends a message in this one before the much awaited LN matchup that will be one for the ages.

Whatever happens GOOD LUCK to both fine teams, staffs and communities! It should be lots and lots of fun on a perfect evening for HSFB!
