Lafayette just beat Helias Catholic 68-51. Sets up a great final in C4.Wow. Bet it was a good game
I was trying to figure out the plays at the end. With the game tied Vashon controlled the ball for about a minute at the end of regulation then settled for corner 3 for the win and missed. They matched up pretty well in quickness and had a size advantage but instead of driving to basket and attempt to score, and/or get fouled, they jacked up a 3 from the corner? Then Sikeston was down 3 and had the ball in front of their own bench with 8 seconds left in OT. The kid that caught the inbounds pass fired up a 25 or 30 footer as soon as he caught it. No move to get closer or make a pass, just catch and shoot like their was 2 seconds left. I didn't understand the thinking for either team's strategy with a chance win or tie with plenty of time on the clock to get something better. It was indeed a very good fast paced game with many good athletes working their tails off. The atmosphere was rockin' with the sea of red...
A few missed FT's late was the difference...oo

Vashon had LOTS of time to come up with something better than a corner 3. If you drive into the defense at least you might draw a foul and try to win it at the line. They didn't even leave time for a rebound and put back if I remember correctly. The Sikeston defense sure didn't stop the penetration for a bucket and 1 which turned out to be the only points of OT. Nobody could hit a shot or a free throw after that. The Sikeston kid just heaved the ball at rim like a desperation last second shot. They could have gotten a better look than that in 3 or 4 seconds surely. The Vashon 3-pointer was made because Sikeston's defense shut down the guard penetration for Vashon and the pass to the corner was their only option.
I believe Sikeston's quick shot was made because anything under 3-4 second would have resulted in a foul by Vashon-----Sikeston would be shooting 2 free throws and down by 3 points. I have no doubt Tony Irons would have put Sikeston on the free throw line with little chance for the win.
I understand that for sure, and it ain't just HS kids.3rfan I can tell you that wasn't the play that was drawn up. The kid just tried to make a play and it didn't happen. You can't ever predict what kids are going to do.
