Mo says they have internal options to take over and he doesn't want the search for a manager to linger into mid November which means he's looking for the cheapest option. Who the heck is the internal options they have? Shildt had them the playoffs 3 straight years, he was manager of the year in 2019 and won a lot more games than he lost. Who wants this job if you have to get in the WS every year to keep your job? I reckon somebody will walk into a pretty good team right off the bat so he absolutely better win big immediately!

Stop whining.

One of the rumors is that Schildt demanded a new hitting coach, but Mo loves the guy and wouldn’t allow it.

additionally, the rumor was that the players got so disturbed with the hitting approach at mid season that Schildt had to step in. If that is true, there could be trouble ahead.

Sounds like an issue that could stir the pot for sure. Mo says they have to find a LH power bat off the bench. Where you gonna get one of those on the cheap? If they're really very good they don't want to be a pinch hitter all the time when they can be a DH for good money. Looks like there will a big demand for those in NL next season.

Shildt won over 50 games more than lost in 3 seasons. What are they going to find to be that much better? Keep hearing Oquendo, mostly just fans, but I would have to imagine that that ship has sailed quite a while ago. I know it wouldn't happen, but interesting to have Yadi as a player manager. I know in this day and age that wouldn't work, but who out there knows the game better than him?

According to Michael Kay, Mike Shildt was fired by the Cardinals because the front office wanted to fire some coaches on his staff and replace them with more analytical guys. Shildt stood up for his guys and went with them.

Haven't heard about anyone else gettin the axe yet. I'm still trying to figure who all their great internal, options are. I just read a headline from the Post Dispatch that said Arenado should have some input on who the new manager should be. REALLY?!!! If they let that happen they're opening the door for some BIG issues in house. How about Molina, Waino and Goldy?

Shildt supposed to address the media tomorrow. Would imagine will get some clarity there. Best explanation I’ve heard, and it’s all speculative, was that Shildt expected an extension. 2022 is the last year of his deal. Mo and his staff had concerns and wanted to pump the brakes on the extension. As it broke down, things that were said that couldn’t be walked back, so a change was made. I think it speaks volumes that Mo and Dewitt both said they expected all coaches under contract back. Dewitt also said that it was a difference of opinion between “Mo and his guys” and Shildt. Pretty much means Shildt went with gut too much and not the analytics. Using the Reyes decision in the playoffs as a microcosm, I can see that.

I heard today that Stubby and Marmol could be in the running and Matt Holiday has interviewed for the job, maybe they count him as an in-house guy?

I thought that was odd to say all coaches would be back without the manager being hired yet. Would tell me it would be someone in house or w close ties. Hard to imagine an outsider would come in and just inherit a staff and not put together his own.

You know Mo and his guys have done studies on "by the book" versus "gut feeling" decisions. I'd guess by the book comes out on top more often than not and that's the direction they want to go. It's starting to look like the manager is just going to be a figurehead. As Pancho pointed out about the assistant coaches, why would they expect them all back with new manager unless the brass is going to making all those decisions too. I wouldn't expect a TLR type to get the job again. Skip seems to be getting some early play.

My gut says the players were surprised by the move but not really all that torn up. For some reason I just never got the feeling they were all in with Shildt. It's kind of sad he made the playoffs all three years but will forever be remembered for the Reyes decision.

Agreed and most of the time I tend to agree with the analytics. But there's a problem with all of that. Take what Dave Roberts said about starting an opener, he had one vote. And I somewhat agree with that. But during the game, if crap goes sideways, or the eye-test tells you something the metrics don't, you have to have a guy to make a decision. Take what Kevin Cash did last year. Hell, he pretty much cost TB a chance at a WS title by pulling Snell in Game 6 because that's what the analytics said to do. But anyone with half of a brain that understood baseball knew that guy was dealing and should get enough rope to at least continue on. But the Rays have been extremely successful following the 2020s version of Moneyball. That's the rub for me, sometimes decisions in a game come fast and they go against the numbers. Sometimes they're easy, like leaving Snell or not putting Reyes in. Sometimes they're not. Sorta like the Skipper once said so elequently..."buh, men not machines".

I heard Skip is in the mix too.
