Joey Goodson, a former player and assistant coach at Saint Francis University in Pennsylvania, has been selected as the new assistant coach for the Missouri S&T men’s basketball program.
Goodson will fill the vacancy on the staff of new head coach Jim Glash, who was elevated from the assistant’s role after Dale Martin stepped down as the Miners’ head coach following the 2008-09 season.
“I am extremely excited to have Joey joining our program,” said S&T director of athletics Mark Mullin. “His knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm will make an immediate impact on our men’s basketball program and our department. We are happy to have him join our exceptional coaching staff at Missouri S&T.
“I think that Joey is a perfect fit for our program from a personality and basketball standpoint,”
Glash said. “He should be a great asset to us due to his experience as a player and coach. We need someone with can handle aspects such as conditioning, weight lifting, administrative matters and individual instruction and Joey has a wealth of knowledge in all of those facets.
“I have always been a believer that point guards make good coaches because they are in a situation where they have to take on responsibility,” Glash added. “Joey has been in that position for years, serving as a team captain for a high-powered high school program and as a four-year captain at the collegiate level.”
Goodson spent three seasons on the Saint Francis staff after a four-year career as a player for the Red Flash. During his three years on the coaching staff, he helped lead the program to winning seasons in three consecutive years ? a first in the team’s history ? and to three straight appearances in the Northeast Conference Tournament.
He assisted with the off-campus recruiting as well as on-court instruction and scouting at Saint Francis.
During his playing career, Goodson served as a team captain for all four seasons and started in 62 of the 105 games he appeared in, making his mark as a top defensive player and playmaker.
He finished with 73 career steals and 193 assists while averaging 4.5 points per game. He was third on the team in steals in his senior year despite missing a good portion of the season with an injury.
In the 2004-05 campaign, Goodson was named as the Northeast Conference’s pre-season “Defensive Player of the Year” by Lindy’s Basketball magazine.
Goodson, who is from Reston, Va., averaged 6.1 points and 2.5 rebounds during his senior season with the Red Flash. He earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 2005 and joined the university’s coaching staff that fall. Goodson played his prep basketball at Gonzaga College High School, where he was also a team captain and named as one of the top five players in the Washington, D.C. area by Lindy’s Basketball magazine for the 2000-01 season.
