RUMOR Has it

Landing Jay Spoonhour would be a MAJOR coup in Houndtown. It's not only because Jay Spoonhour is a national championship coach at the juco level and has served as an assistant at UNLV, a D-1 school that has won a national title -- he is also the son of a Moberly and a D-1 coaching legend in Charlie Spoonhour. Not only would the younger Spoonhour be a great coach to lead a juco program as storied as Moberly's, his hiring would be a PR dream. Gene Bess is still my favorite, but since Coach Bess thankfully isn't leaving TRCC soon, Jay Spoonhour would be my first choice if I was the 'Hounds AD.

I would be lukewarm to that idea. Mainly because I think it would be a very short-term solution. You can figure probably 2 years for Jay at a Juco, 3 at the very max. I don't enjoy going through this every 2 or three years. That is one thing that has kept us from being as successful as we could have been. Whoever is hired as Pat's successor will be the ninth head coach of the Hounds since Coach Bess came to 3R. Therein lies the secret of their success. Continuity is a very important ingredient. Granted it is very unusual for a coach to stay anywhere as long as that, but the average tenure of the Hound coaches since Cotton is not real long. I don't think Spoonhour would be my first chioce. And yes I know he won a National Championship. I would rather have Kenny Seifert, or any one of a number of Juco coaches I am sure would be interested that have had a record of success in the Juco ranks and are more satisfied at the Juco level and are not always constantly looking for a D 1 job. And, as someone posted, why didn't UNLV hire Jay? Just my opinion.

A quick response:

Granted, continuity helps. But, it is not a dealmaker with most teams. Indian Hills and SE of Iowa haven't had the same coach for 30 years, yet they're still right in the thick of the national title hunt.

That's a good point. But, UNLV and Moberly are two VERY different places. Just because someone isn't good enough to coach at a mid- to high- major D-1 doesn't mean they can't be a great juco coach.
My opinion...while Spoonhour might not stay more than 2-3 years, he'd be worth having until then. And who knows? He might stay a while longer than that.

You make some good points bluff. Agreed on the issue of continuity. Not the whole secret, you mentioned a couple of exceptions. Although, at SE Iowa Joe O'B was there what 7, 8, or more, and before that Jim Wyatt must have been there 12 or 13? As far as Jay Spoon, hey you pay your money and take your choice. It might indeed be worth it for even 2 or 3 years. It would be a fun ride for however long. I guess if history could repeat with him what happened at Wabash Valley any school would be willing to do it. I didn't want to leave the impression I was totally against Jay, I am certainly not. I would be very excited if he were to get the job. Anyway, it should be an exciting next few weeks in Region 16.
