Can a coach open the gym in the spring for players to come in and shoot if she is not providing instructions or organizing the open gym. Basically open the doors and sit in a chair while kids do their thing?

All these geniuses on here and no one has an answer. MSHSAA RULE BOOK says no lessons or organized activities but I would assume that opening a gym door and turning on lights isn't a lesson but who knows with MSHSAA. Our coach does a good job of giving her players opportunities to shoot and I don't want to see anyone in trouble.

Pretty much what I assumed. I just feel like if a coach will sit in his office while kids hit in the batting cage or a coach will open a gym and watch while her kids shoot, or a football coach sits in the field house while kids mess around running routes after weights it's a heck of a lot better to have them doing that stuff then what they could be doing.

I personally feel there is nothing wrong with opening a gym up and letting kids go at it. The rules are clear that you can't have an organized anything and no sport specific instruction. I would imagine the way around this is have a parent open the gym and not be in the building when it happens...but then you run into other problems...like who is coach, etc...

I think sports does keep lots of at risk kids out of the bad stuff. I definitely wouldn't want to be obligated due to the allowance of practice to have to practice 9 months out of the year. I was glad to see MSHSAA decided to limit contact summer days.

Amen on summer contact limits. Let's coaches, players and families have a life during the summer. That was voted on by the coaches though not by MSHSAA deciding that for themselves.
