I am so tired of seeing fouls called on defensive players jumping straight up with their arms straight up when an offensive player throws her body into the defensive player initiating the contact. I actually heard a ref this weekend tell a complaining coach "Her feet weren't set".REFS - the defensive player does not have to stand still like a statue with both feet stationary on the floor and arms at their side to draw a charge. Good defense is being penalized.

This happens in boys games too but is much more prevalent in the girls game.

There are a lot of players that drive and throw up bad shots hoping to get bailed out with a foul call. That being said i would have to think the charge / block call is probably the toughest to be accurate with.

Agree it's a tough call, but it's darn near impossible to draw a charge in the girls game with many refs. It's so hard to get girls to take a charge, and then do they not only not get the charge, but are penalized with a foul. Most coaches are happy with a "no call" when the offensive player is out of control.

Having been a participant and then fan of the sport for many years, it pains me to say that because of the influence of the NBA and then trickling down from college and the subsequent evolution of the game, it has become an exhibition sport, much like gymnastics.

I would agree with Kaskaskiakid. It is impossible to get a charge call in girls basketball. The state of girls basketball has devolved into dribble as hard as you can at the rim, fall down, and the officials will call a foul.

Not around here, I see charge calls all the time in SEMO area.

I saw a game last week in St Louis when the post defender was going straight up and gave way backwards to the driver who threw her body into her. Foul called on defender and heard the ref say...”you can’t move backwards”. Probably better to just get out of the way because chances are shot will be missed anyway.

Then you are in the minority.
Well I can tell you you won't get a charge called if you're moving backwards or any other way. But I have seen many charges called in this area if they stand there and take the hit without falling backwards before contact is made. Refs really get into the charge call. :p

Depends on the quality of the official and their dedication to their profession.

I have asked an official this question before in that situation. "So if my player is moving backwards, and the offensive player still finds a way to run into her, who is initiating the contact?"

The rules simply state that the defensive player has to establish a legal guarding postion.

I agree with you. I've always thought they should get the call if they're not sliding over but I'm not sure I've seen it called if the defender was moving any direction. :(

Priscilla Williams looked like a running back busting through the D line the couple times I've seen her play...and it's always called in her favor.

They are not supposed to award offensive players for initiating contact, but they seem to forget that part. It was a point of emphasis a few years ago to stop calling fouls in favor of offensive players that just barrel through to the basket. The correct call on that is either nothing or to call player control.
