The Reeds Spring High School football team has always protected its home turf. Starting next season, the Wolves will have a better quality turf. The school district has agreed to buy synthetic turf that had previously been used by the University of Cincinnati.
UC installed the NFL-grade turf in 2013. The university is replacing it because the field must now be shared with a professional soccer team, which requires different markings on the field.
“This turf will allow our athletic teams and band to practice and compete rain or shine,” said Michael Mason, superintendent of Reeds Spring Schools. “This also cuts down on the district’s need to maintain other practice facilities. When our new middle school opens later this year, we won’t have to bus kids to a practice field.”
Reeds Spring Schools learned about the turf's availability through the district's relationship with Pro Football Hall of Fame President David Baker and his wife, Colleen. Baker was the keynote speaker at the 2015 PACK NIGHT at the Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction, which is an annual event put on by the Reeds Spring R-IV School Foundation. The Bakers were able to open doors for the district and afford us the opportunity to purchase this phenomenal field.
“I’m excited the Wolf Pack will have a first-class professional field upon which to build their championship seasons, and I look forward to many Wolf Pack players someday being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio,” said David Baker.
The Reeds Spring R-IV School District will pay approximately $450,000 for the turf and its installation. This turf originally cost $1.1 million. When compared to the maintenance costs of the grass on our football field, the district will pay about $20,000 more per year. The district will pay for the turf with the use of a lease purchase over the next several years. Even though the turf is a few years old, the district will receive an eight-year warranty, which is normal for new turf.
“This opportunity presented itself, and the school board and I agreed, this was too good of an offer to pass up,” Mason said.
The turf should arrive within the next couple weeks. The district hopes to have it installed and ready for use by the end of the school year.
