So while 8 man football is embraced in states like Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and expanding rapidly in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, why is it still so small and even seemingly at times disliked in Missouri? There are dozens of schools who would benefit from making the move, but seem content winning 0-3 games with rosters hovering around low 20s or below, often only beating other teams that could benefit from the move too, and getting nowhere in the postseason because they are usually too beat up by then to put up a fight. It's still football, kids still get recruited from 8 man schools, it's still Friday night lights, so why so much reluctance and even disdain?

(cue the predictable and ignorant "8 man is only good for a nice nap" comment)

No idea. There are a ton of schools in southeast Missouri who could start 8 man programs and essentially double the pool of teams playing 8-man ball.

I figured, I know there are several in Northeast Missouri as well. But as of now, there is only one on the whole eastern half of the state.

I don't blame schools for wanting to keep 11 man for as long as they can. But I do think more schools will be going to 8 man out of necessity in the coming years, due to dwindling numbers. Sorry if this response isn't gung ho enough about 8 man football. I'm sure it's wonderful.

I think that's a huge part of the issue. Travel expenses. Tough to be the 1st or one and only school in the Bootheel when you know your closest game is 6 hours away.

I agree. I was hoping when we switched before 2016 that it would open it up for NE Missouri, but it has barely spurred discussion, despite how much it has benefited our program. It's going to take a group of teams in an area deciding to move together like what happened in SW MO for this season. We are trying to facilitate those discussions up here, but there has not been much willingness to listen yet unfortunately.

That would really mess up Fall Baseball!!!

I think the issue most people have with 8 man is when schools drop to 8 man solely for the wins and not out of necessity and break contracts at the last minute leaving opponents scrambling for games. I have seen multiple teams drop to 8 man with plenty of players to field an 11 man team but had a schedule they created not conducive to wins. So instead of play through adversity and work harder they just take the easy way out and say oh no we don't have 5 all conference linemen boo hoo we need to play 8 man.

So if they have a schedule not set up conducive to wins as you say, working harder is the solution? They shouldn't address the schedule issue at all? And breaking contracts is tough, but last I knew those that move have an obligation to their kids and school first.

The issue sometimes is schools not being loaded and therefore not wanting to play their conference schedules. For example Sacred Heart, Appleton City, Osceola, all had enough players to stay 11 man but refused to work through the gauntlet they had for schedules. The coaches have a responsibility to recruit the hallways and field a team to compete with their schools, contractually obligated opponents and win or lose teach these young men how to face adversity. Here's and example of whats happening:
1. We only have 25 kids out playing 1A football and out of them 3 good linemen. Our conference has some really tough schools all who are 1A with 20-30 players on their teams.
Old School: Coach up the kids you have out work your opponents. Find 2 more kids to play line and coach the heck out of them and create schemes to make them successful.
New School: Hell with that we'll just cancel all the 1A games on our schedule giving late notice to our conference schools and pick up some 8 man schools and win 7 games without breaking a sweat.

Without breaking a sweat? Of the 7 most recent teams to move to 8 man, only King City and Orrick won 7 or more their first year, and King had won 6 their final year of 11. In their debuts, Greenfield won 0 I believe, Braymer 1, Osceola and Sacred Heart 4, we won 5. On the other side, King went 6 to 8, and Orrick 3 to 9. The point is 8 man is more competitive than you 11 man elitists give us credit for and I don't see how coaches putting their kids in safer situations is a bad thing, just because it forces somes teams to "work harder" to find games.

May not be the most recent but Tarkio went 7-4 in their first season of 8 man back in the fall of 2010 I believe. Their best class of athletes were all seniors that fall and their strength of schedule dropped dramatically. Had won 3 games total in the previous 3 years and won 7 in their first year of 8 man.

Well, there you go, Vandy. I think a thread around here that survives 7 comments without doc guy hijacking is pretty good, actually.
Touchdownsilly is a doc guy? Heck, I just figured he's a butthurt, cliche-spouting machine. Wonder what made him so butthurt toward 8-man, though. :D

Touchdownsilly is NOT a Doc Guy. There are only 2 ways one can become a Doc Guy. The first way, you starred in a sports documentary, you are alive, and your profile picture is of you. The second way, you must be voted in as an Honorary Doc Guy.

Way to know your Doc Guys Shoot! And youre right, I am not a fan of 8 man football. However, I am a fan of naps and I go to 8 man games, to take a good nap. So does that mean, I actually like 8 man football!?!?

Eh. I’ve got to drive to S Texas today. That’ll take the Peppery right outta anybody.
Good...the Doc Guys won't have to endure Raw Meat all day! But safe travels, and remember if you get into an accident and need a lawyer.....

Heck! if youre in Texas, stop by West Canaan! Im sure Mox would show you all the local hot spots. Like the Landing Strip.

It's amazing how when you throw out facts and call people out who need to be called out you're all of sudden butt hurt. 8 man has nothing to do with safety it is about schools wanting an easy way out of tough schedules. I can't wait to see what happens when some of the 8 man schools start losing a ton of games and want to introduce 6 man football. I will refrain from derogatory statements as it applies to individuals rectums and focus on the real issue at hand.

Wow! Its amazing how heated people get, when it comes to 8 man football. For something so boring, it sure is a lightening rod around here!

In my opinion, it is like the NFL and Canadian Football. One is Football the other is just a cheap version of what it is supposed to be. (no offense intended)

And there's my answer..... And plenty of offense taken, but I respect you for at least sharing something relevant instead of just poking fun.
