The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Union has reached a tentative agreement with the National Carriers. I don't get any information about the train crews union but the deal on the table for BMWE is far better than anything I've ever seen offered by the companies in my time on the RR or since I retired. Contract has to be ratified by the rank and file but I can't imagine they won't accept this deal. Hopefully the others unions involved will take it too.
Now I hear UPS may be going on strike. 😒

This is what happens when minimum wage increases. My child works for a fast food place and is bringing home over $700 every two weeks for a 16 year old child working less than 30 hours a week! They could make almost $19,000 in a year again this is a 16 year old kid, hard for me to believe.

I hope the unions do strike, Prices are increasing wages need to keep up.

Looks like the Engineers are not accepting what they've been offered. Lot of big wigs from all sides are going to the WH for meetings to try too get this done. It seems sick leave is the big obstacle for them. I can't imagine they will shut this country down over that but it appears to be headed that way. If they go on strike or get locked out ain't gonna be much freight moving in this country which mean the containers on the docks will just set there again. The poor BMWE folks that will likely ratify their deal will hafta sit at home with no pay if the Engineers walkout. I don't think the engineers are going broke buying groceries and gas.

It’s 2022, not 1983. 19,000 for 30 hours a week all year isn’t exactly a bonanza. Like you said, prices are up. They started going up before wages did.

I should make a correction, if BMWE members are off the job honoring the picket lines of another craft they will receive strike benefits . I have no idea what that pays but at least it's something.

RR workers have had a damn good job for a long time. I find it hard to believe they have much to complain about. Bad time to be throwing a wrench in the supply chain.

What's sad is we can't seem to have the teenagers who want to work 25 hrs a week for $350!!! Good for your kid!! Don't feel too sorry for the fast food chains.

However, a national minimum wage is not a good idea. $15 an hour in NYC isn't much, but it's great for a teenager flippin burgers at McD's in Potosi.

It is for a 16 year old living at home with no expenses. They will have a good start on a college fund we are teaching them to put some away for saving and how to balance a check book...LOL even though they use a debit card.

My nephew is an engineer for the railroad out of Oklahoma, That boy does real good for himself. But I also know they are out a lot.

I've got a relative that went to college for solar stuff and does that job for the railroads.

He's doing well for himself.

Real curious, 3R, what kind of money we talking?

My sister in law retired from the Union Pac office in STL with a nice retirement plan in her mid 50s.
I have no idea what trainmen make now, when I retired as a trackman 17 years ago engineers made 75 to 100k while I made 30 to 34k with a lot of overtime/time an a half hours. I don't really know about brakemen and conductors. I was making about $17.50 per hour then now it's around $28 an hour and about to get a 4 1/2 percent raise per year for a 5 year contract. They have been working under the old contract for 3 years and that's the way goes just about every contract I was involved in. The difference is this time they will get full back pay for the all regular and OT hours for those 3 years. We NEVER got full back pay after they wooled around the contract talks for 2 or 3 years.
Not sure how she is retiring in her mid 50's unless she has an injury that won't allow her to do what she does. RR retirement age is 60 with 30 years of service.

Not sure on sis in law details other than she had an inheritance, 401Ks, and pretty sure she got some money from RR.

Sounds about right on current salaries. I always assumed the RR paid about the same as Boeing, Chrysler, and other good jobs in the area. I would have guessed your salary 17 yrs ago with many yrs experience a little higher but guess you guys expect lots of overtime. $80-90K isn't that much anymore. The top of the food chain is feasting now and have been for a while!!

Not really on the OT. We always got some because of weather and derailments and the like but I volunteered for most of mine. If we had a spray truck or contract brush cutters on our territory I would volunteer for that and get some OT on regular work days and all day on Saturday and made foreman's pay even when I was not holding regular track foreman job. Most of the guys I worked with didn't want the OT.
Train crew wages aren't figured like our hourly rate. I never really knew exactly how they were paid. The over the road trips were kind of a ton-miles deal and the yard switchers and the local runs that went from P.B. to the industry tracks in our territory were paid differently, I guess hourly. The there is the difference in engineers, conductors and brakemen and we still had firemen on some runs when I was working. I doubt they have any of those now and a lot of long haul straight through runs without setting out or picking up cars along the route would only have an engineer and conductor.
