"Currently we use the standard eight-team bracket, single elimination for determining a district champion. It has been suggested that we look at giving the 1st and 2nd seeded teams in a district a bye and have the 7th and 8th seeded teams play each other in Week 10, along with 4th versus 5th and 3rd versus 6th."

Am I right in thinking that the 7th and 8th ranked teams would play their game against each other in week 10 and then they would be done?

I can see that the 8th ranked seed probably does not need to be playing the #1 seed, but their have been some #7 seeds beating #2 seeds...

This does not make sense, you would have 5 teams still alive after the first round. How would you select opponents after that?

In most cases the 1 vs 8 game is virtually a bye game so I don't see why it needs to be changed. I know there are some ugly mismatches but that is what comes with earning a #1 seed.

I'm not saying it is being suggested in this thread but I don't understand the notion that I think some have that the week 10 game should necessarily be competitive for the system to work. I think week 10 should have the most blowouts and the games should steadily get more competitive from there.

Totally agree frog... Why does all the games have to be competitive? You earned the number one seed and the right to play a lower seed. If this is such a good idea why not do it in Basketball Wrestling and such?

We didn't have all these problems with four team districts and the district winner advanced into the playoffs

This is the kind of crap that happens when you try to fix something that's not broke

im fine with it and the blowouts. you get to play your younger kids against the opponents varsity and rotate 2-3 in at a time with the main varsity squad before its a blowout. game reps make kids better

7 would play 8....season would be over for both after week 10 regardless of result.

3 would play 6.....the loser is out, the winner would play 2 in week 11.

4 would play 5.....the loser is out, the winner would play 1 in week 11.

It would work out fine as far as the bracket is concerned.

Why would you want a playoff game where both the loser AND winner go home?

Because it's not a playoff game. It's a week 10 game so both schools have an opportunity to have a 10 game season.

No, not at all. Its not a seeding it is district STANDINGS. If you finish 7th or 8th you dont get seeded and on the bracket. Now, the seedings match the standings, but if its only a wording thing.... there you go.

What was the proposal about multiple title winners ??

Would Webb and Lamar's kids have to carry 20 pounds of lead next year to make the games more competitive ????

Re: What was the proposal about multiple title winners ??

again i think i said my point of view, some don't agree but that is fine, if i am a 8 or 7 and my game doesn't count to go on, not going to play it

Re: What was the proposal about multiple title winners ??

One day MSHSAA will just give me a call and let me solve this problem for them.

I think making the 7 and 8 seed games a pointless game is an awful idea. Here is why, with the way the point system is set up teams and players will be able to tell when they are mathematically unable to move out of the 7 or 8 spots. This could happen as early as week 6 for some teams. That would mean that their season is basically done at that point because they know that no matter what, they wont go on into the playoffs. The beauty of the way the system is now, is that every coach can tell his kids that week 10 matters. Anyone remember what is was like to try and get kids to play hard on a week 10 game that didn't mean anything, now imagine that starting in week 6 or 7. The system is not perfect but neither was the old system. At least with this system, every kid and coach will get to have at least one meaningful game a year.

I love this idea!(...in fact, I outlined this idea on these boards back in week 9; not saying that MSHSAA got the idea from me, but I am saying that I thought of it before I was aware that they were considering the very same thing...)

What's the point of making a team that is clearly down on their luck(at least for the season in question) get on a bus and travel only to get turbo-clocked(therein lies the biggest flaw of the "everyone makes the playoffs" approach used in this state); why not take the two worst teams in the district and instead of sending them to the playoffs(where they don't belong and where they will likely only get embarrassed or maybe even hurt), allow them to play each other in a "consolation game" against an opponent that they actually have a chance against?
