Kicking off the 2008 high school basketball season the
Pepsi Showcase in Cape Girardeau featured top teams from the Show-Me State.
Final results looked like this:
Hazelwood Central 75, Cape Central 52
Pinckneyville, ILL 40, Miller Career 39
Poplar Bluff 61, McCluer 57
Lafayette 72, Sikeston 64
Chaminade 62, Maplewood 59
Saturday's Best
Here is a quick recap of top players this weekend.
Some you know about some you just have to see because they are among the top
players in Missouri. Here are the "shining stars" from weekend
action in the Pepsi Showcase.
Bryce Foster, Hazelwood Central 6-4 200 Sr Guard
The best on a very talented Central basketball team.
Foster has a high basketball I.Q., a deft shooting touch from deep, and the
ability to make every teammate better.
Michael Porter, Sikeston, 6-6 Sr. Forward
Porter does it all for the Bulldogs, playing both inside
and outside. Porter has really improved his ability from the perimeter and
gets to the basket off the dribble.
Bradley Beal, Chaminade, 6-3 Sophomore Guard
Beal quickly showed by even though he is just a
sophomore he may be the most highly recruited player in the state. Bill
Self at Kansas University loves Beal who can score in many ways and is down
right unstoppable at times at the high school level.
Riley Raulston, Poplar Bluff 6-4 Sr. Guard
Raulston has opened the season in impressive fashion
scoring 39 points Friday evening in the Riverbend Classic and 26 points in the
Mules victory over McCluer. Raulston can beat you in many ways, from beyond the
arc, off the dribble, and scoring tough baskets in the paint. A top
emerging guard in the Show-Me state you must keep your eye on.
Lonnie Boga, McCluer 6-3 Sr. Guard
Headed to Milwaukee-Wisconsin Boga didn't have his best
effort in the Pepsi Showcase, but was able to show fans in attendance the
potential to be a solid player at the next level.
Bryant Allen, Maplewood, 6-0 Sr Guard
Allen was a star for the Maplewood football team that
advanced to the semifinals and just finished a little over a week ago.
Showing no signs of rust Allen is a legitimate candidate for Mr. Show-Me
Basketball and a lightening quick point guard who can score with any perimeter
player in the state.
Tyler Griffey, Lafayette 6-8 Sr Forward
Though he has already committed to the University of
Illinois, Griffey spent the summer improving his perimeter jump shot and it was
apparent on Saturday. A skilled big man, Griffey teamed with Will Kirksey
to defeat Sikeston 72-64.
Will Kirksey, Lafayette, 6-7 Sr Forward
Kirksey is just a load at the high school level where
most teams can't match up to his size. He still gets plenty of garbage
points and plays well with Griffey.
Josh Harris, Cape Central, 6-2 Sr. Guard
The best player for the Tigers who were overmatched
against the Hazelwood Central Hawks one of the top teams in the state. A
nice athlete, Harris can knock down the 3-point shot and has a quick first step.
Brandon Lockhart, Chamimade, 6-1 Sr. Guard
A steal for any mid-major division I program who is
smart enough to recruit him. Lockhart has added muscle to his frame in the
off-season, yet still has the ability to blow past even the quickest defender
and knock down jump shots from anywhere on the floor.
