Wow how times have change. And not for the good. My coaches in High School and College would have kept us out for an entire game or at least a half. Ran our butts off and chewed off what was left. And if it were a second time it happened It would have been like a 57 Chevrolet with a sign that read low miles, great car, runs great. For sale $500.00. Would be gone the next day. I have been coaching for 39 years. I am not out of touch nor a task master. But in most cases we are the only hope these kids have of being made to do things the right way as well have the respect no matter what the conditions. "This is in reference to the players that flipped off the crowd"

Your coaches wouldn't have known about it thanks to the non existence of cell phones and cameras.

You grew up in an era where Dick Butkus tried biting fingers off and Ty Cobb was honored at de

There's a lot of truth to this. Age of social media and instant information. Internet mafia gets hold of stuff and everyone gets on their moral high horse. It's funny to me how a lot of society preaches tolerance out of one side of their mouth, while those same folks would post and tweet and favorite a story like this until their thumbs bleed (totally understand that's not what you did, Apple). We could all just chill a bit on the "humanity" issues. Actions need to be handled. Gestures and words, are just that, gestures and words. The bigger lesson is how a person with hurt feeling handles their hurt feelings. Thicker skin could be grown a bit more.

yea back in the day it was a badge of honor if coach broke a clipboard over your helmet making a point. Can you imagine what would happen today if someone caught that on their iPhone????

My high school track coach CUT MY HAIR because he didn't think it was short enough.
Dad looked at me when I got home and commented that it needed to be shorter yet to suit him.

I don't think it's "getting on your moral high horse" to condemn a player for flipping off the crowd. Gestures and words have meaning and impact, and should be punished accordingly.

I think these "tolerance" people you're talking about preach tolerance for beliefs and values. Unless I'm mistaken, flipping somebody off is not a symbol of any religious or ethical practice. You're conflating two issues.

This is a simple issue of right and wrong. The players that flipped the crowd off should be punished because he was wrong. Period.

I wasn't defending them at all with what I was saying. Was simply stating it gets blown up because of instant information. I can't imagine the number of times Vince Lombardi or Bear Bryant told a screaming fan to go eff himself. I'd be willing to bet it happened plenty. But not many knew because nothing went viral. But lets not overreact (like we do so much in the age of instant info). Some serious physical exertion and miss a few minutes and move along.

Ida cracked my kid in the forehead but with that neither would have done it cause they'd know I would crack them in the forehead, lol. Suspend for a game and run their butts off. Young men make young men mistakes some like Mike Vick didn't run enough when he was younger.

What a crazy world it would be if words and gestures had no meaning. It's how we communicate. If they have no impact, then what's the purpose?

I don't think they should be burned at the stake. Suspend them a game and run their butts off then move on.

Why does communication have to have meaning outside of your interpretation? Too many people get too concerned with things that don't matter because of the increase in "communication", IMHO.

I don't think they should be burned at the stake. Suspend them a game and run their butts off then move on...Again, don't disagree. My point was never about this incident, or punishment or lack thereof. It's the fact that some folks get stirred up about stuff like this like it has never happened before, and when it does the mafias rain down. It has, we're just far more visible. And it's far easier to get a message, anyone's message, out. I suppose I have less patience with this kind of stuff the older I get. Led me to a mini rant.
