I'm a younger guy, but I have a lot of interest in the history of Missouri HS athletics. I think it's actually really cool to hear about schools such as Grain Valley playing in a conference with the likes of Lone Jack & Butler. There just isn't a lot of information about this kind of stuff in google searches. Or the sweeping changes in enrollment throughout the state, as well. My mother went to Caruthersville H.S. just forty years ago and they used to consistently have around 500 kids. Now they compete in Class 1. Maybe nobody cares about stuff like this, but I certainly think it's interesting to know about the history of schools & how far towns have risen and fallen.

If anybody is willing to share information about former conferences (pre-2000) and the like, I'd love to hear about it!

SEMO North and SEMO South began 1n 61-62. Prior to that, they were known as the Big 8 or 9 and the little 6.
Prior to the KC Suburban Conference formed in the 58-59 school year, those schools were part of the Midwest Conference that went back to the early 30s. The 8 schools the last year were Center, Blue Springs, Ruskin, Pleasant Hill, Harrisonville, Grandview, Lee's Summit and Fort Osage. Some earlier schools included Lone Jack, Buckner and Oak Grove.
The KC Suburban was a single conference through 62-63, two conferences until 72-73 and then 3 divisions until 03-04.
Liberty and Excelsior Springs were part of the MRVC and William Chrisman and North KC were part of the Pony Express with the St. Joe schools.

What about sports history that has been featured in documentaries?? I could talk your ear off about high school football in PA! I also know a guy who can let you know about TX high school football!

You should also reach out to @seksports3. He runs this site http://kansasfootballhistory.com/ and used to post on MoSports all the time.

From a private school perspective I find the closing of St.Marys(Independence) and O'Hara as examples of the eastern suburbs taking over in KCMO area. I think St.Marys had 500-600 in 1980 and by 2000s were down below 200s. I know it was a private school, but a lot had to do with the migration out of Northeast Kansas City to north of the river with the wealthier Italian families. O'Hara lost lots of kids as Bannister and Raytown areas changed and Summit Christian picked up on the movement east towards Lees Summit and Blue Springs. Now St.Michaels has popped up and are grabbing kids in the Indep,LS,BS areas.

The Central Missouri Conference started in the late 30s with Hickman, Jeff City, Smith-Cotton, Hannibal, Missouri Military and Kirksville. Other members over the years included Centralia, Kemper, Fulton, Mexico and Rolla. The conference folded after the 75-76 school year with only Jeff City, Hickman, Hannibal and Smith-Cotton as members.

Nike - you may not know that Grain Valley was in the I-70 Conference in the 1980's. They matched up with Windsor, Wellington-Napoleon, Concordia, St. Paul's, Sweet Springs, Santa Fe, and Crest Ridge. Tough conference. Now the I-70 Conference is gone as far 11-man football as many of those schools have gone 8-man.

Great post! I'm actually a former coach & player in the Tri-County!

You can really see some of the natural rivalries that once existed in the initial founding of the conference: California-Tipton, Camdenton-Osage, Eldon-Versailles. The growth explosion of the Lake and the steady growth along the Highway 50/54 corridor around J.C. is really shown. Out goes Camdenton and Tipton, in comes Blair Oaks. Wardsville and Taos are growing incredibly fast. A lot of Helias students are from the Blair Oaks school district as well, but BO still maintains a growing enrollment.

Now those geographical and societal influences changed the dominant rivalries. I wouldn't say Versailles or Boonville really have sole major conference rivals anymore. Yes, I'm aware that California and Eldon were once huge rivals of Versailles, but Versailles seems to be on their way out of the league in years to come as their population stagnates amongst the growth of the other six schools. Wonder how long it'll take before they're in the Osage Highlands conference with ex-TCC Warsaw... I have no clue about who Boonville's main rival was for their history. I know they were in the MRVC and more recently in the NCMC. If anyone knows more about that, I'd love to read!

Back to my last point, now the main rivalries look more like: Blair Oaks-California, Eldon-Osage, Hallsville-Southern Boone. Just crazy to think about!

By the way, I really appreciate all of you who've posted in this thread. The pagentry & history of MO HSFB teams unfortunately gets forgotten and lost in translation all too often.

The Clarence Cannon Conference was formed in 66-67 school year. Members were Centralia, Knox Co., Louisiana, Mark Twain, Monroe City, North Shelby, Palmyra and South Shelby. In 69-70, Paris joined, and the following year North Shelby dropped out. Macon joined in 71-72 and I think the following year Highland joined and Knox Co. dropped. Clark Co. came in in 10-11 and Brookfield in 11-12, I think. Mark Twain dropped on in 14-15 and Louisiana in 18-19.

The CCC was the old Quint City Conference that started in 47-48 with Centralia, Louisiana, Macon, McCooey (Hannibal Catholic) Palmyra. Monroe City and Paris were members but did not play football. Macon and LaPlata were football members in the 50s and Monroe City and Mark Twain started up around 1960 and South Shelby and North Shelby later. Notable coaches were Pete Atkins at Centralia, Gary Lynch and Fred Merrell at Monroe City and Hugh Dunn at Macon among others.

This was before my time, but I've seen old clippings of the Spring Valley Conference which consisted of Seneca, Carterville, Granby, Anderson, Noel, Jasper, Sarcoxie, Pierce City, Goodman?, etc from the 1960s. School consolidation may have done more to evaporate that league than anything. It think the next SRVC got the idea for its name from that old league. Seems to be a name that can't last.

When did Paris drop? I had to be before the 80s because they were not in the CCC when I was in school then.

All games in the Tri-County in the 80's were rivalry games!

Versailles major rivals are still Eldon, Osage and California. The Southern Boone and Hallsville fans never seem to have gotten that. Their enrollment and growth has been pretty same as California. They aren't leaving anytime soon unless a split off with the other Lake schools happen. The main one who wanted to leave is now Westminster's problem.

Spring Valley also had CJ and Galena Ks as members.

Interesting to see in CJ's case, how some towns and schools can quickly outgrow the situation. I've heard that Republic was once in the old Midwest Conference, which had several schools in today's Southwest Conference. Also, someone posted the other day that Ray-Pec was once in the WEMO. As for Republic, it was interesting to see awhile back on a Golden City community forum where they were looking at some old football scores from the 60s, and they were chuckling that they had beaten Republic around 1963 or something like that. It was definitely a different era.

Maranantha Academy was part of the Crossroads Conference about 10 years but I do not know if the played football. Elwood, KS was part of the Platte Valley 8 man conference a few years back.

Gotta love strolls down memory lane. Just one of the many reasons we Doc Guys like to hang out here!
To bad you guys do not remember what you did...

MEC used to be five schools. I remember several years ago I think Kearney and Kirksville may have been in the same conference. Hows THAT for a heck of a long trip.

The MEC started up as the Pony Express ended with Benton, Lafayette, CBC, Maryville and Savannah.
Kearney was never in the same conference with Kirksville. First I find of Kearney it was in the precursor to the KCI, the Northwest Missouri, in the early 60s. First I find of Kirksville was when they joined the North Central in the late 40s. However, just a couple of years before, Wentworth was in the NCMC.

Kearney was in the MRVC when Boonville was a member. In the 90s when they moved to the West Central had Clinton in conference. Both were pretty substantial trips.
