Oh Stevie

How many schools need to close for it to become a problem?
You didn't have a problem with 2 a couple weeks ago.
Now it's 6. Is that ok?

Absolutily ok with it. Those school districts AFTER the cuts are still recieving MORE money than they did just three years ago with the same amount of students, teachers, and staff

the positive changes that come from cutting taxs are not seen over night, they are seen over decades. If poorly ran school distrcits closing a few days early are the only problem to come form it short term its a good thing

Did you read the Joplin Globe last week about the local schools in MISSOURI going to a four day school week so they could save money? They will be closed more days during a school year than the kansas schools closing a couple weeks early. Instead of crying they made a decision and did something to save money and still educate the kids. Schools all over the nation are going to a four day week to save money. Contrary to liberals beliefs it doesnt grow on trees or come from Obama someone has to earn it and we that do are tired of seeing it flushed down toilets.

The "positive change" from a tax cut is not on the government side, it's on the side of capital and labor.

Exactly!!!!!! I dont want the government sucking resources that should be staying with businesses and the people. Our FEDERAL government needs cut in half it has grown into a hungry monster that consumes way to much of our resources

DOD?
Back to the original point. What is happening in Kansas is not anything like a 4 day week. Those schools are shutting their doors this school year, because they don't have the money to make it through the year. Those schools going to 4 day weeks are being proactive to prevent having to close the doors early during the year, because the state doesn't fund them enough to make it.

Only Steveo or possibly Miller could defend kansas and the "abortion" that has occurred there.

Kansas may or may not have done the right thing tax wise. Results from tax cuts take years to shake out. A few schools closing a week early is of no concern to me or likely anyone involved.

Or likely anyone involved. That is clueless.

Yeah, I'm sure the teachers and parents of children that go there are totally cool with it.

You really think anyone is distraught over school being out a week early? The only people concerned would be the ones having to get daycare a week earlier.
I am thinking the ones that actually have things they want the students to learn. Please run for the school board and learn some things about what actually happen in a school.

Has nothing to do with the local school board. Not surprising that MSNBC is only covering part of the issue - the one that makes the Governor look bad (I am not necessarily a fan of his). The issue goes back to the early 90's when Governor Joan Finney (talk about a train wreck) and the more powerful (at the time) rural legislators pushed through a radically different education funding formula that seriously hurt strong school districts like Shawnee Mission. Essentially, the ability for local taxation for the benefit of the neighborhood school was taken away and that money funneled to the rural districts. The problem is that there are huge tax exemptions for large landowners (in Kansas you have ranches with in excess of 20,000 acres - many of which are now owned by large corporations) and farmers (no tax on farm equipment, fuel, and even some household items) resulting in huge inequity in money flowing out of the KC suburbs (where the education costs are higher) to small rural districts - many of which need to be consolidated. You see Taj Mahal's like Blue Valley Southwest being built to the tune of 15 million+ because the only way to get money is to build - not for students, teacher salaries, etc. At the same time you have instances of rural schools opening the cafeteria on Wednesday mornings during the summer for a community breakfast - free of charge, because the district has to spend the money or lose it.

What Brownback is doing with school funding is replacing (temporarily - until a new formula can be worked out) the current system with block grants. Districts that had been suffering and having to cut programs like Shawnee Mission have actually seen increases to their budgets. Additionally, the Governor is pushing to allow more local taxation for the support of schools - something the rural counties don't want as they are essentially riding the gravy train for free at present. The problem with districts losing funds happened because the change happened after budgets where set.

I am pretty skeptical overall with the Governor's tax plans, but for critics to use education as the victim is wrong. Rather, we should look at social services, transportation, etc. as areas for concern.

MORock, that's a separate issue. The core issue is that the governor's team lied and said the tax cuts would pay for themselves to where education and other core services wouldn't be affected by the tax cuts. Of course the cuts didn't pay for themselves. Instead of admitting the truth, they are taking money out of education.

It would be one thing if all he were doing is taking money from District A to give it to District B now. But, that's not what he is doing that has people fired up.

I understand your point, but that's not really what cowherd, expect, and others are talking about. They are talking about the fact that Brownback has cut the state's funding of education to pay for tax cuts that were supposed to pay for themselves.
