One year ago my two NWMO teams to watch were LIBERTY NORTH and FORT OSAGE. Nobody could have predicted Jones' exit for Oregon which I do think, in retrospect, impacted the Eagles especially offensively. Fort was a model of overcoming early adversity and making a healthy run all the way to the Championship game so those two verified pretty well. What nobody could have predicted was the emergence of teams like KEARNEY and BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH. Another huge 2022 story was SMITHVILLE and how they showed the State that is a program built to stay. Nobody cares for consolation prizes in this fine sport but their effort vs. St. Mary's is something to be beyond proud of.

SO now on to a quick, way too early peek at 2023: My two main teams to watch are aforementioned KEARNEY and ROCKHURST who returns virtually everyone and should return to prominence (they showed signs of it at times during their daunting schedule this year). It will be very, very interesting to see how the ole Alma Mater files that hard lesson vs. Smithville in the cabinet and uses it for 2023 motivation with this very solid, deep JR class returning. In saying all of this I have no doubt, though, that LEE'S SUMMIT NORTH will enter next season the #1 team in the KC metro.

Overall it appears 8-man will continue to grow (they need to move to 8 districts and standardize with 11-man, frankly) and there is no way to know how especially the middle classes will break.

See you all next season! I tend to move on to other stuff once MO HSFB ends but will check in from time to time.

I'd keep an eye on Oak Park in C5 out of KC. They were a tough out this season with a very young group. Grain Valley and Fort both will be replacing qb's so we'll have to wait and see on them.....NKC always has athletes and I'd expect Staley and PC to be better.

Agree on Oak Park and Staley also would upon looking at some of my stuff consider a big rebound by St. Pius X. One thing is for sure HSFB in the Northland next year will be as good as it gets.

Suburban Blue

Excelsior Springs - Challenge in talent lost, but likely stay even. Just not enough in the talent pool to make a move.
Grandview - Good talent and had a good year. Maybe do a little better next year.
Kearney - Conference champs and 75% of their offensive production coming back. The junior and senior classes have been a wave coming for years. Some of the most talented will likely play both ways--it will be lights out. QB, Starting RBs and both WRs return-7 O starters in total. Two of three linebackers return--7 D starters in total. (Both the Junior and Senior classes dominated opponents as Frosh teams.) They will miss big Zach Grace, but "little brother" Grace who started as a LB this year, will be a Junior. Maybe see him on offense as well? Will still have the speediest defensive backfield in the conference.
Smithville - Coach's son looks to be a really good RB. Receiver, Jet, likely one of the fastest kids in the conference. Will be strong team again. Lose 95% of offensive production. But who cares...they are coaching genius' right? I'm sure they can overcome the raw athletic deficit. Don't underestimate their line play---they can make things happen.
Raytown South. Another team with talent. Look for them to improve their record.
Ruskin. They can only go up.
Tonka. No way they can stay down where they have been. Will improve.

Smithville is very deep. Amazing number of kids out given that town size.

What's your take on Blue Springs South? I know Wilmes did an amazing job there this year with the huge turnaround. Did he take an experienced group and bring them together or were they very young with a bright future ahead of them?

Wilmes is a great program building coach. He is a former stand out Francis Howell grad. He was the DC at Howell in 2012 when they lost to Blue Springs South in the state title game. Did a great job building the Park Hill program. That program has a bright future with him at the reigns.

That program will continue to rapidly ascend! I will have to go back and check the roster to see what they have returning but it won't matter with a HC like Wilmes. He already proved that.

I think our consensus moving into 2023 is it looks very interesting and PROMISING in the KC metro area.

Oak Park is the C5 team to beat. Returning a lot.

C6 Lees Summit North just assume there will be multiple transfers in from both sides of the state line.
I don't know about Rockhurst anymore. The coaching staff is top notch, but I don't think the school has the pull it once did. The Blue Springs schools both are on an uptrend. If they can retain their talent they will both be teams to watch.

C4 Kearney- If they had played like they did against Fort in week 2 they wouldn't have lost this year. I think their very week back half schedule hurt them come playoff time. I wonder if the coaches have any say in mixing that up next year. No doubt with their underclassmen coming back along with great coaching they will be the ones to beat.

Were I Kearney would look at another good KS matchup circa Weeks 7-8. With the explosive growth at Grain Valley I doubt they will schedule K or Smithville again.

Howell (public) torched Fort & would have been in class 6 title game had they had been placed there. Interested to see if they stay class 5. QB & OLine returning.

Kearney, Class 4, torched Fort. And no, Howell would have been knocked out in the semis, maybe before that...because CBC, Liberty North and Lee's Summit North were all better.

I respect your your opinion but analytics along with a perfect season & torching of every team played including 6A teams suggest your wrong. Were you at the CBC vs Howell Jamboree? Did you get a first hand view of the matchup? Howell put up nearly 300 more points then LN & LSN.

Howell 719 PF to 208 PA. Half of the PA were on the JV who played the second second half of many games
CBC 657 -298
LN 431-146
LSN 432-217

Howell is a great Jamboree team. They would have won most jamborees around the state.

Apples and Oranges on points...

Liberty North had 7 opponents better than Howell's 3rd best opponent.

Lee's Summit North had 9 opponents ranked better than Howell's 3rd best opponent.

Howell's second best ranked opponent was Fort, who got torched by Class 4 Kearney. THey were meh, this year.

I think Kearney got lucky they caught Fort early. I'm sure if Fort got a second chance, it would have ended up much like the second Smithville game for Kearney.

Play crappy teams, put up lots of points.

You mean Kearney would have 5 turnovers against Fort in game 2 as well? Dumb ass

One team peaked at the right time and made it the championship game and one didn't make it out of their district. I would go with the one that made that it to the championship game in a rematch. Kearney peaked early. They didn't beat anyone with winning record after game three.

And what does this have to do with Howell? Howell had an easy schdule...the second highest rated team they beat was FORT. And now this guy is claiming they would beat everyone in class 6---even though history has shown that to be completely untrue.

Peaking? They had about 300 yards vs. Smithville and had 5 turnovers. Show me teams that win with 5 turnovers? Reverse it, and K wins by 20 - 35 points.
