no tackle football until 12

I'm interested in what the MOSPORTS FOOTBALL forum thinks about this...

I like it. It is always in the spring. So sometimes the kids need to play baseball, run track and develop as athletes. We do a Youth program down here, and there is no time for the kids to develop physically between that season and start of their Fr. Year. So to many injuries, Too much banging on the young bodies. I know people will say the summer time. But that is when we have camps and see what is coming up.

OK, start the bashing.

I would have no issue with it as long as it is done for all sports. I have a friend whose 10 year old son has suffered three concussions already and none of them have been on Football. Two were in Basketball and one was in baseball.

Let's let kids be kids again.
Not a fan. Too many dads out there with good ideas for plays. All that talent would go to waste.

Bullit you are right. Let kids be kids. How about we open the gyms, stadiums and courts and just let the kids in. Parents just watch, And I was one of those parents. Until my kids came home and said enough... You may want to step back and listen to your kids. Raise them and let them play. I bet they really enjoy themselves and work hard. Something about picking teams in the backyard and getting after it.

I totally agree however what about all the Fathers who live vicariously through their kids and have as much knowledge of the game as any coach out there. In fact they might have more insight than current coaches do to the fact they always know what plays to call after the games over; that would have turned defeat into sweet victory.

Well over half the kids in youth football (in big suburban areas at least) will never make one play in a high school game. Youth football is their only chance to play football. So if we are going to make football illegal for under age 12, then:

rock climbing
motocross
three-wheeling
BMX Racing,

and the follwing should be banned as well:

  • Basketball. More than 170,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for basketball-related injuries.

  • Baseball and softball. Nearly 110,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for baseball-related injuries. Baseball also has the highest fatality rate among sports for children ages 5 to 14, with three to four children dying from baseball injuries each year.

  • Bicycling. More than 200,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries.

  • Football. Almost 215,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for football-related injuries.

  • Ice hockey. More than 20,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for ice hockey-related injuries.

  • In-line and roller skating. More than 47,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for in-line skating-related injuries.

  • Skateboarding. More than 66,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for skateboarding-related injuries.

  • Sledding or toboggan. More than 16,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for sledding-related injuries.

  • Snow skiing or snowboarding. More than 25,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for snow boarding and snow skiing-related injuries.

  • Soccer. About 88,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for soccer-related injuries.

  • Trampolines. About 65,000 children ages 14 and under were treated in hospital emergency rooms for trampoline-related injuries.

JNreturns that is my point exactly if we are going to do away with football for youth because of injuries we need to look at all youth sports and injuries.

stop selling bikes at Wal Mart and fort Gods sake don't let kids go to the creek swimming
These people have never watched Pee Wee football :)

I thought that meant games couldn't start till after lunch honestly

Yelp, guess we need to wrap up our kids in bubble wrap so they can all grow up to be pussies

So many tough guys on mosports. There is no reason kids under 12 need to play tackle football. You can learn stance, alignment, assignment and ball skills playing flag football. Young undeveloped brains are more susceptible to issues that may not show up for decades. Do some reading.

What do you do when your kid falls of his bike or slips and cracks their head at the pool.

If injuries because of Football worry you, then don’t let your child do anything but don’t stop my from experiencing life and striving for self improvement.

m to shake it off

How do you know taking a hit as a kid can cause problems decades later??? People have only been harping on it last 3-4 years

Nobody did baseline studies on 10 year old kids 40 years ago,,,with a control group who never took a blow to the head of any kind to see if there is a difference in brain function now that they are 50

In one practice you can "hit your head" 15-20 times. I dont think my kids ever fell at the pool and they swam all the time. Bahahahahaha. There were many kids I coached who only played flag football prior to 7th grade who went on to play college ball. There is no need to bash their little brains. Do some reading on CTE.

Do some reading. College and NFL players who played tackle at a young age are more likely to have CTE issues.

I have and CTE is nonexistent on kids that quit football before Highschool. It’s minimal on those that played in HS. CTE is most common in those that played in the NFL.

Life is short. People seem to forget that. Let people experience it how they want. It’s not about player development. It’s about letting these kids have fun.

Has anyone ever looked up what else can have effects on CTE? How about drug usage! Those fellows that played in the NFL during that time span "The Steroid Years" used that, HGH and even a few, Lawrence Taylor and Jim McMahon might have snorted white stuff. I am sure those things had no relevance! Anyone ever looked at the effects of Marijuana on the brain? A lot of factors go in to this discussion that make a difference. Can football with repeated head trauma cause problems. Yes! Are their other factors to CTE discussion, YES. To all the bleeding hearts out there, if you truly care about keeping YOUR KIDS SAFE don't EVER put them in an automobile! Way more dangerous than playing any sport. And by all means don't let teenagers drive.

Another thing I think has gone overboard is these kids are playing 10+ games. Not to mention attending these tournaments where they play multiple games in a day, two or three days in a row. There were several little league teams in our area who started practicing the end of July and season was still going at Thanksgiving time. I think a big part of the problem is a lot of these coaches are disgruntled former players reliving out their glory days and can't get enough.

Just my 2 cents but I started in 7th grade, and we played like 5 games. I think that is the way to do it.

And kid bike wrecks are worse...and happen all the time. Jostling heads. Please.

Im not sure the idea would be to get rid of football all together for youth.. Just not tackle football... In Oklahoma, which is just about as football crazy it they come, you used to play flag football until you were in 5th grade. Not sure it is that way anymore, anywhere.

No not that way anymore, they actually put on football tournament where youth will play several games in one day. It is getting crazy in youth football.

So in other words, we are all going to die any way, why not smoke some meth. SMH.
Flag football is all an 8 year old needs.

So in other words..SEE above list for serious injuries caused by numerous activtities...thus no need to pick out and single out football to make illegal. We have a few more activities that should be at the front of the line.

In none of those other activities do you repeatedly bash your head into another person or the ground as part of normal activity. Come on man. You cant play tackle football and keep the head completely out of contact.

Did you ride BMX? Do trails? Are you kidding me? the jostling and the impacts are constant.

Wrong. They are finally doing study on other sports and finding the CTE is relevant in almost all of them, Soccer, baseball, Hockey, Basketball. Its all there. Do you know which sport has the highest number of head injuries? It's not football, it's girls soccer.

REPORTED head injuries.

So you are saying football is dishonest while other sports are honest? Spin that web, brother. Facts are Facts

Based on this response, one of two things is true either A) you never played football or B) your brain is so damaged you don't remember what happened.

People get their head dinged all the time and they have for decades. But where I grew up you just get back in the line and you try to return the favor the next play or drill to the other guy. People get hammered and dazed but they love football and there is no way they are
going to miss a play, let alone a game or practice. In girls soccer, that happens and we are seeing a doctor. Same with a lot of other sports. That is where your reported statistics come from. STOP IT. You know this.

We are just now changing that culture to be a little smarter. Although sometimes the NFL lets a guy stagger off and come back when everyone knows its nuts. Eight year olds should not be playing tackle football.

I have seen many players in soccer collide or get hit in the head with the ball. and need to be helped up and you can tell they are stunned dinged whatever you want to call it, and with no trainer on sight they just kept playing. They have no concussion protocol that I see. If that was in a football game and a player the trainer would be over there looking at them and probable would have been diagnosed with a concussion.

And it goes on, and on...multiple concussions for anyone that plays soccer over a a number of years... Headers banned in 11U because of it.

Oh boy come look at this internet tough guys. This stats come straight from insurance companies. I run the youth program in my town from 3rd through 6th grade. These kids simply do not hit hard enough. I have seen 1 concussion since I started coaching youth sports. I have had to replace ZERO helmets that have been damaged and I send them back every year.

Where I have the problem is this is an escape for many of these kids. Some come and play and hate it never to play again and some of them love it. Some kids only play youth football. I have some with disabilities that will never play past youth football. And jack asses like you want to take it away with opinions.

Safety is my Club #1 priority. We only hold practices 2 days and week and no long than 1hr and 15min each. We also only play 6 games. If I get my way, 3rd and 4th grade will be reduced for 5. We want all the kids to play and have fun.

Just the KC area champions and runners up from the past three years...have STRONG youth football programs. I'm sure it doesn't help at all. Yeah, Skyler Thompson just happened to play on a National runner-up Pop Warner team--but I'm sure he would have been just as good without it.

2017 Runner-up C6 Blue Springs (BSAA, KCYFL, and Pop Warner)
Staley -Champion Class 5 (Northland Suburban League Youth)

2016 Class 4 Runner up (Kearney Youth Football Pop Warner) Class 6 Blue Springs (see above)

2015 State Champs: Fort Osage, Blue Springs South, Kearney All in Pop Warner, Blue Springs has BSAA, KCYFL, and Champions League
