...Am I the only one who was surprised that Nixa dominated Helias the way they did???

Helias has a new coach so it stands to reason they might have some growing pains. I think when it counts they will be okay. It is nice to see Nixa playing well from the get go, they don't always start off real hot. Which Howell do they play next week?

Just read that in the paper this morning. Probably still a Nixa win the way they cut through the Helias defense like butter but, it's too bad he was out because that could have been a barn burner. Hope he comes back soon. The high ankle sprain got our starting running back too who was out for the first game. Those are painful.

The have whole new coaching staff as well with a lot of first or second year coaches. It's a bit of a difference playing against the competition Helias is used to playing week in and out and the competition South Callaway played against.

Any thought from Nixa fans about the game? I have heard from fans at the game that Helias could have scored more and with ease had they thrown the ball more? Helias kept trying to run it and was having little success with a few exceptions. They also fumbled it and provided Nixa with a short field on several occasions.

I would agree about the new coach comment, but learning whole new offense and different calls on defense is tough with limited time to do it before first game.

A new coach no matter how great they are. Causes problems first year. At any level of Football. Its an entire new thing for a team to figure out, and there will be growing pains the first year. Look at last night for example. Aurora for sure had the better team on the field against Cassville but, anyone that has a little bit of Football Knowledge knew they would have a difficult time winning last night. They are just learning the new system the Head Coach has brought in.

Quite often a new coach knows he has a couple years grace so they play younger than the normally would. That can lead to "trouble adjusting to the new system".

Too much is made out of a new coach. If you can coach and you have players you will do fine. JRod at Rockhurst? Would that be a down year for them? Fred Bouchard at Staley? etc. etc.

If JRod decided to install the veer at Rockhurst I do believe there would be some growing pains.

They'll make a huge deal out of this (just because it's Nixa) but the fact is Helias doesn't appear to be that good. Certainly not the caliber of team they had last year. This week should be very telling for Nixa.

The word is that the new coach started putting this offense in with the kids back in March. Just like most other coaches do when kids aren't involved with a spring sport. Had a number of scrimmages over the summer against some good teams. Faddoul being injured may have been the game changer. Once he is healthy again things should look up for Helias. How far will they go? To soon to tell.

It is always dangerous to read too much into a season opener but I think the consensus opinion was that Nixa should be very good this year and that Helias was likely to take a little step back from last 2-3 years. IF you throw in Helias RB being out then I don't know the result is shocking.

Helias has a tough schedule so they may lose a few more but come playoff time they will probably be a tough out.

Did anyone else notice that Nixa got the ball at the start of the game AND to start the second half? What was that all about??

If I had to guess, I'd say that Helias won the toss and mistakenly elected to KICK instead of differing to the second half (or Nixa won the toss, differed, and Helias mistakenly elected to kick).

I've seen each of these scenarios more than once before as both a captain on the field AND as a fan (luckily, I/my team was never on the short end of this common mistake )

...captains need to be reminded of this at the beginning of every season at least (IMO, before every game at this level).

If JRod ever went to Rockhurst, the whole country would be in a world of hurt after a year or two. You know how much easier recruiting would be for them if The Man was coaching there?? LOL.

No disrespect to Severino, he's done great with Rockhurst for a long time now, but just the thought of JRod and all the resources he would have at a school like the Rock. Scary. I know the chances of that happening are pretty much never, but just thought I would throw that out there.

I remember about a decade or so ago Rock was having to schedule games in Nevada and Minnesota and other places cause they couldn't get anyone to play them here. I believe those were back in the Tony Temple days there before he went on to the Zou

Yes a mistake on the call from the sidelines. Read in paper today
First, even with the starting QB in, Helias loses the game. 2nd, Offense struggled because the starting QB was hurt in the jamboree so there was limited days that the offense had to prepare so the playbook was cut down I am sure. New system is always hard to learn and the loss of a great senior class is even more devastating. Coach Rulo does a great job, but as in most cases (besides Webb) the talent falls off in some years. It will take time and I said with their schedule, they will be lucky to finish .500 in regular season. It will prepare them for the play-offs and that is what counts.
