Class 3, No. 1, Cassville (14-1 in 2009)
Two-time defending Class 3 champion Cassville will return this
year with the endorsement of league coaches. 15 starters return for
the Wildcats who have enough talent back to entertain ideas of a "three peat".
In route to earning the state title in 2009 the Wildcats averaged 31.3 points
per game, while allowing just 200-yards of offense and 10.8 points per contest.
"We return all of our starters on defense other than one defensive
tackle", commented head coach David Large.
Five members of the Wildcats return after
earning all-state honors including senior linebacker Devin Linenbrink(6-2
190) compiled 119 tackles and 5 sacks, senior DT Garrett Mahurin(6-0 250)
added 70 tackles and 5 sacks, senior CB
Chris Smith(6-2 180) contributed 7 interceptions, and senior LB Trent Tanner(5-6
160) added 73 tackles and 2 sacks. Josh Lewright(6-1 175)
earned all-state honors at defensive back following his 71 tackle, 2
interception season, and returns this season at safety and wide receiver.
Others returning to the Wildcats defense include senior linebacker Bo
Blissard(6-1 180), senior defensive end PReston Forsythe(5-9 180), and
junior safety Trey Rose(5-10 150).
"We have a lot of
experience back but will need to keep improving and working together as
a team in order to be successful. We return 4 of 5 starters on our offensive line.
And two other linemen with starting experience.
They will have to provide leadership and experience as we break
in a new QB/RB/TE/WR." Junior Ricky Nichols(6-0 170)
appears ready to step in at quarterback, while junior Staton
Stringer(5-10 180), and senior Kyle Dunivant(5-10 190) move into leading
roles at running back along with junior Kyle Brattin(5-8 180).
The Wildcats enter the season with momentum of a
pair of Show-Me Bowl titles. Their defense is loaded and will
carry the club early in the season as their offense gains experience for
the district and post season run.
