Class 4, No. 1, Kearney (13-2 in 2009)
Defending Class 4 champion Kearney enters the 2010
campaign with hopes of a repeat performance. The Bulldogs return
experience with much of their team including senior starting quarterback
Shane Hartzler(6-3 200).
"We have a lot of our lineman back on both sides of the ball", commented
head coach Greg Jones. "We feel like we will be
strong up front but we have several questions about our running back
situation. We graduated our entire fleet of
running backs
so we will have to work to reload there. We feel our receivers will be
pretty solid and having our QB back from last year will help."
Hartzler returns after passing for nearly 2000 yards
and 20 touchdowns. The Bulldogs return five starters in their flex bone
attack including senior offensive lineman Caleb Benner(6-0
270) and senior lineman Greg Harris(6-1 265).
Senior Jarod Love(6-0 220) will be more involved on offense, joined by
senior running back Tanner Wendel(5-10 170), and junior running back
Brian Raynal(6-0 180).
"Defensively
we lost some key players but some young players will have to fill their
spot and prove themselves. We will rely on our depth and numbers to push
us to improve through out the season", added Jones.
The Bulldogs return seven starters to their 3-3 stack
scheme led by senior linebacker Brandon Jackson(5-7 180), as well as
senior linebacker Alex Clemons(6-1 190), and senior linebacker Ryan
Rische(6-2 170). Senior defensive back Colton Michael(6-0 210) returns
along with Love in the defensive backfield.
The Bulldogs should compete with Staley once again
for Suburban Blue bragging rights before the playoffs and a another
possible showdown with Webb City for a right to repeat.
