Newburg tournament

I'll be there for 3rd and 1st. I'll take cuba over crocker and Williams gets 35 and steelville over newburg by 59 to 42. Booker has a double double.

#15 Columbia College vs #13 Freed Hardeman

I will take Crocker over Cuba under 5
I will say Newburg leads at half but Steelville prevails

Looking at Facebook, it appears everyone missed the 3rd place game as it was moved up to 12:00. The consolation game is being played at 3:00.

Saw on Twitter that Newburg girls were gonna be interviewed by Scoreboardguy on ESPN radio today. He’s really moving out of his area to be reaching out to the Frisco League. Good for them.

Steelville 40-36. How was refereeing?

It’s almost like Newburg must’ve been reading this forum because the officials that were there today were highly competent officials. One couldn’t ask for much better. However, Newburg crowd might disagree with my assessment. They were not happy with the adjusted call which was made several minutes later after the original call was made. Seems like they had a legitimate gripe, but overall those 3 officials are some of the best in this area, at least in my opinion.

Newburg is so up and down. They can win that district or lose first round. That being said I like how much composure they've gained since beginning of the season. Steelville didnt take them seriously. Their coach spends more time griping than coaching. I even heard the assistant getting in on the ref bashing. Hes normally the calm one.

Rematch is tomorrow night right back at Newburg. Steelville's coaches probably should use today recollect and slow their rolls, and see if Steelville as a whole can come in with a whole new outlook of a Newburg team who could hit everything, or not make anything from night to night.

please explain

Although Steelville does have a very high quality Track coach who has recently been very successful, I really truly only have the following explanation:

sar·casm
/ˈsärˌkazəm/

noun
  1. the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.
"his voice, hardened by sarcasm, could not hide his resentment"

Curious what everyone’s opinion was of the official’s changed call during this game. Steelville did a good job of containing Newburg’s “do-it-all” player Claire Affolter and was successful at getting her into foul trouble. What was strange is that her fourth foul along with Steelville’s protest to the officials came several minutes and numerous possessions after the original foul was levied against another Newburg player. The original foul was given to number 21 and was communicated to the score table by the ref as being number 21. Affolter’s number is 22. The score table put number 21 on the scoreboard as receiving the foul. I presume the score table also recorded 21 in the scorebook and I also presume Steelville recorded 21 in their scorebook as receiving the foul because there was no protest by Steelville at this time and the official had indeed told the score table that the foul was on 21. Several minutes later, and getting close toward the end of the game, Steelville convinced the referee to change the foul from number 21 to number 22. This change levied the fourth foul to number 22 which is Claire Affolter. This, in my opinion, changed the dynamic of the game. She could no longer play her usual style of hard nosed in-your-face defense and caused her to even allow a free uncontested layup by Steelville because she couldn’t afford to contest the shot due to having 4 fouls. I just found the whole scenario to be very strange and something I’ve never seen before in basketball. Had the official motioned number 22 to the score table instead of 21, I could understand Steelville’s protest. Because this would mean that the score table made the mistake and gave the foul to the wrong girl. But the score table was only going by what the official gave them. If Steelville thought the foul should’ve been called on number 22 instead of 21, why didn’t they immediately protest the call instead of waiting half a quarter? I thought these types of changes could only occur if there were a discrepancy in the teams’ scorebooks. Even with such an odd sequence of events, those three officials are some of the best in this area. Anyone else have an opinion or any insight on this?

The steelville coaches did tell the officials. The refs waited til the next dead ball for whatever reason. The foul was on 22. Reggie reported it wrong. He knew it. Melvin knew it. The scorers table knew it. That's why it took so long for the foul to be put up on the scoreboard. When it flashed on the jumbo tron was when the game was stopped and the correct girl was charged with her 4th.

I 100% agree with you that the foul should have gone to 22. It was definitely her that committed the foul. However, Reggie reported the foul as number 21 and the scoreboard reported the foul as 21. I remember seeing 22 commit the foul, I remember seeing Reggie report it as 21, and I remember seeing 21 reported on the scoreboard as having committed the foul. At this point, both teams’ scorebooks should have recorded the foul as being 21, not 22. Play resumed with several dead balls and live balls until a timeout was called. That’s when Steelville assistant coach approached Melvin. Reggie admitted that he reported the foul as 21.
I’m not complaining that ultimately the wrong decision was made. Ultimately, the correct decision was made and the mistake was corrected. Like I said, those officials are quality officials. I was just making a point that I’ve never seen that much time elapse and that many live balls dead balls before a decision has been corrected. Most corrections must be made during the next dead ball, before it becomes a live ball again. But I guess my memory of the event differs from Hoopsquad’s, as I remember it definitely not happening on the next dead ball.

The officials are some of the best in the area, but later the names Reggie and Melvin were mentioned, so which is it?

You must have low standards for what a good official is if you think they are some of the best.

Maybe so, but in this area and particularly the Frisco League, competent officiating has been set at a pretty low bar. I was unaware that Crocker had all the good ones booked! If you’re not from Crocker, my apologies to them.
I’m not going to argue with you about my opinion when obviously you and I have a completely different outlook on how a game should be officiated. If I remember correctly, you’re the same guy that wants to see every single instance of contact called as a foul and believes that basketball has gotten entirely too rough under the basket. I believe if officials called the game the way you expect them to call it, teams would need to have 12-15 kids on the roster and games would come down to free throw contests. Oh, and I guess a 2.5 hour game would be fantastic. I would certainly love to sit in the stands and watch teams shoot free throws in the bonus for 2 hours or more.
I’m sure you were thrilled with the officiating in the Frisco League Tournament this year with all the fouls called. It was ridiculous! And even more ridiculous was the inconsistency of it. A good official should be consistent, even if they are consistently bad! But with a few officials in the FL, you can’t even get them to be consistently bad. And I’m not talking about the majority of the officials in this area. Most are not horrible. But there are a few that consistently ref Frisco games that should probably not be allowed to ref junior high games.
If you think Reggie and Melvin are so bad, I’d love to know the ones that you think are so fantastic. Actually, I’d rather not hear names because it’s unfair for us to sit here behind our screens and bad-mouth someone and they not be able to defend themselves. But I’d bet it’s the very ones that I think are the worst. Differences of opinion here, that’s all it is. I just happen to think your opinion smells like...well it just smells.

Melvin and reggie are quality. They get selected for districts and beyond every year. Robert is good. Ed is good. Jason Tucker is a newer official but he has been very solid in every outing I've witnessed this season.

Ed is one of my favorites.

Wow, the rematch between Newburg and Steelville ended up being quite a game! Newburg avenged their loss from two days ago, but didn’t get a 1st place trophy with this victory. But I’m sure they’re pretty happy with the win even though it didn’t come in the championship game of their own tournament.
Score: Newburg 45 Steelville 43

Maybe Newburg has put the pieces of their puzzle together and have learned to start playing with some consistency. If so, they sure picked the right time of the season to get it done.
