I have a hard time believing the officials in the st Robert association being assigned those games are missing the above examples
Then you obviously haven’t watched many Frisco games. No, they don’t miss all those calls every game and not every official from Frisco has missed calls like the ones mentioned. However, every example I gave has occurred THIS season. And the anticipation of a foul which results in a blown whistle has happened numerous times. Yet once the whistle has been blown, there is no putting that sound back inside that whistle. Officials NEVER admit right then it was a blown call. The call stands. However, officials have apologized twice THIS season to the same player for this very thing. However, the game was over on one occasion and on the other occasion the official apologized between quarters on the throw in.
And I apologize, no official has made an “over-the-back” call and reported it that way to the score table. But there are always parents and fans screaming for this very call and many calls have been made because of this. This call is always a “push” and this call SHOULD require actual contact. Simply tipping the ball away from behind or being a good rebounder or tall girl and getting the rebound from the girl in front should not be penalized by the official. Again, contact must occur.
I guess I shouldn’t be so hard on Frisco officials, because I’ve seen all of these calls made in all leagues. But it sure seems like there’s substantially more questionable calls during Frisco League games. But my view is probably skewed because I watch more Frisco games than I do from the other nearby Conferences.
I also want to be clear that there are a few very good officials from the FL. But there’s many more that aren’t so good. And I have no idea how many or which ones belong to the St. Robert Association.
I also agree with Hoopsquad that some of these officials should stick with the junior high games. It’s incumbent upon coaches to be honest in their MSHSAA assessments of these officials. Maybe then the not-so-good ones will be excluded from varsity tournament games. I can promise you there are several that you will NOT see anywhere near the state tournament. Some probably won’t be given the opportunity to officiate districts either. At least I hope not. If your going to be an official, KNOW the rules. Pick the book up occasionally and refresh yourself of the rules of the game. Get out and watch games during the state tournament and witness good officiating. Try and make yourself better.
I know this post comes across as I’m one of those spectators that constantly hound the refs and place blame on them when the game doesn’t go the way I had hoped. But I’m not that person. I never blame the officials for the loss of a game. And I don’t sit around hen pecking about every little call that I disagree with. I’m pretty reserved. But there’s no reason for varsity level officials to not get the call right in the examples that I gave. And if they continue to get these calls wrong, they should NOT be officiating any varsity level tournament and probably not even any varsity level games.
