New Southwest Conference

I think Clubber Lang said it best - PAIN
I gotcha coach!

Pierce City is dressing 2 seniors. Approx 32 total out. Strong junior class.

Week 1 Lockwood comes to PC. Sarcoxie, LW and PC will all play each other in the first 3 weeks. Could go a long way in determining who eventually loses to Thayer. Miller will be better, strong junior class there as well.

Doesn't PC go into this season as the heavy favorite? Sounds like they are loaded for a two year run?

1) I didn't even know the name of the conference until this thread.
2) Shouldn't we let Thayer play a game before crowning them?
3) Sarcoxie isn't concerned with Thayer (they have bigger problems).
4) Miller will be talented (as talented as anyone). The question is, have they learned how to hit (block and tackle) yet?
5) How do the SRVC teams compare with the Mid Lakes teams? AG, PH, and Comets are gonna love not having Strafford, Fair Grove, and Skyline in their league.
6) Love the new league! Should be stable and competitive. If PH can find their footing, shouldn't be any perennial patsies and everyone has a chance to move up and down the standings from year to year.

Scarcoxie will have trouble in class 2 districts without a doubt.

Was at Pleasant Hope last night. I was surprised Marionville only had about 23-25 kids out. Pleasant Hope around 20 and Miller around 32-34. East Newton had around 45 kids.

After watching those teams play I think East Newton will have a hard time winning a game this year. Marionville should finish in middle of the conference. Miller was by far the best team there. I think they only gave up 3 first downs the entire night and scored at least twice on everyone. They were also without their best player. Hard to take to much away from a jamboree though.

Bleach, you're right. Scratch has bigger problems. Diamond has been class 2 for a long time, funny how the line falls sometimes. Could not begin to predict this conference other than Clubber's valuable insight.

Sounds like just about everyone has good size on the lines and at least some experience in the backfield. Ash Grove and Lockwood may be exceptions to that statement. Really excited to get this new league and season started. Love that Miller has tried to beef up the schedule in and out of conference.

Diamond's enrollment has been dropping for the last few years.

What is the difference for Sarcoxie or PC class 1 or class 2? They pulled one of the toughest districts in Class 1 and faced a tough Thayer who will win the district again this year. Now Sarcoxie is in a pretty descent district in Class 2 to face ultimately Lamar. Seems to me they have a better shot to play in a district championship this year as Class 2 than they did in Class 1 with PC and Thayer.
I think PC is the heavy favorite if they don't get cute with play calling. Hock the Rock knows his stuff.
Miller in my opinion is young but will be tough as nails.
Lockwood is also in the same boat.
Sarcoxie I think will surprise some people if kids step up and fill the shoes of the QB last year. I hear they have some new kicker that may be better than last year.
Marionville will be tough just because of the competition they are used to playing in the MLC they could definitely contend for the upper of the pack.
Needless to say this year should prove to be more exciting than it was in the SRVC.

PC wins the headliner game this week. Anyone with insight?
Sarcoxie with a head scratching loss. Any comments?
Pleasant Hope still struggling bad.
Diamond gets a needed win. Think Mac will get them back on track.
Miller gets a defensive and special teams TD to go with stingy D and big play offense against a yet to be determined Stockton team. I said they would be talented and they seem to have the tackling part going the right way, still more work needed in the blocking category.

Anyone else have thoughts on opening week?

Not really. 2-3 teams in the class 2 district would beat Scarcoxie pretty good. Thayer lost last night to a usually average team. They will be lucky to win a district game. That conference break up that Scarcoxie and Pierce City causes themselves will bite Scarcoxie in the behind.

Hayti usually is good to very good. Thayer would still be the district favorite but not as obvious as previously thought.
Houston might be good.....who knows.
The new conference was BADLY needed. Whoever caused it.....THANK YOU!

PC game was closer than score indicates. Lockwood coughed up the ball and Pierce City returned it 50+ yards for a score right before halftime to go up 21-6. Lockwood came back out and scored to get within 21-12, but that was all the scoring they could muster. The Tigers also seemed to have trouble with bad snaps. The Eagles don't have the huge line like normal, but this one kid, in his first year of varsity ball could be a gamechanger. If the 6'6" 260 lb. junior figures it out, wow!

Why? Some schools now have to play over 2 hours away for over half of there games like liberal and Jasper. It wasn’t right. Sarcoxie deserves to be in Lamar’s district. Hayti is good in the area of the state they are in. Like some teams are. And when they play away from the district, it doesn’t bode well.

The reason it was needed is because Jasper, Liberal and Greenfield could not field 11 man Jr high teams or JV teams. The other schools had them cancel on them or play 8 man crap. It was definitely the RIGHT thing to do.

I hate to admit it but I agree with ya Bleach. It was needed. The whole not knowing if you’ll have a JH/JV game was getting old. Not saying there still won’t be some lean years on numbers for schools in the new conference but not as consistent as it’s been. Honestly we are low in the JH but we will be ok.
As for the game last night I was very pleased with how they played outside of the miscues. Take away those and we are looking at an upset last night.

Going back to the old Midwest Conference days, I hate how several of the same schools have done the same thing to schools like Jasper and Liberal twice.

I do see your point but, the SRVC was born out of necessity. The Mid Lakes conference schools (Strafford and Fair Grove especially) were outgrowing Miller, PC, Greenfield, Sarcoxie, and Diamond. Those schools needed more teams to make a new conference and Lockwood, Jasper, and Liberal were all too happy to join. It would still be the same if those guys could get their numbers up. Lockwood has the GC coop to supplement their numbers but Jasper, Liberal, and Greenfield haven't fielded teams to let the others develop younger players. The WEMO is full of similar sized schools. The New conference has real similar football schools now (size wise) but that too may change some day.

I understand the move and to be honest besides the drives I'd rather be in the Wemo.
A lot of Jasper kids in jr high the last few years are fall baseball players and I know a few who's parents won't let them play for many different reasons. As far as Varsity numbers when you have a team like Pleasant Hope who struggle year-in and year-out their numbers won't be there either and I'd be concerned about Lockwood too.. I see in a few years having problems with both those teams. A buddy from Pleasant Hope told me that the kids sometimes have to beg people to play and when they go 0-10 this year even less Will play. Jasper on the other hand has 32-35 Varsity players and a junior high team.

Im not a big fan of the PH addiction at all. You are right Skin, I can’t see them having numbers much longer. Even if they do they sure aren’t fielding a competitive team. You take the SRVC the last few years they would be at the bottom every year.
Our numbers are light but we will still field a team and a competitive one. We’ve been getting some nice move ins at the younger level so if that keeps up we will be fine.

I think every team in the conference other than Miller 182 and Lockwood 145 have over 200 kids in high school. Liberal has 150 Jasper 140 Greenfield 115. The more kids you have the more stable you will be. I have nothing against Jasper or Liberal I hope they both do well in the WEMO. This move needed to be made though. I think Golden City and College Heights ended up in a good situation with schools their size in the Ozark 7 also.

I don't have an "addiction" to PH! I do like the "addition" though.
Pleasant Hope, like Diamond, has enrollment numbers to allow for roster size even if competitiveness takes time to develop. Jasper, Liberal, and Greenfield need total buy in every year to achieve roster sustainability. Once upon a time, Strafford was a patsy annually as was Fair Grove. Just need the right group of kids/coach to change the culture if enrollment is there. Can't really do anything about low enrollment.

Size is a definite plus on the line (especially offensive) but not a requirement at this level. Miller may be bigger than I can ever remember (When coach LaSalle was in high school they were very big) but, that doesn't mean they are dominant, yet anyways. Quick and strong will get you a long ways. Miller does have just a couple linemen going both ways too and they all look the part.

Hayti is very good this year, RB has numerous D1 offers. QB is an excellent runner also, they are big and fast. They wil beat Valle this year, Catholic's numbers are way down, good skills position but really small (no one close to 200 lbs)

I agree. I watched the game with Thayer online. Hayti looked extremely good. Thayer had no awnser for their Qb and Rb. If Valle is down at all they won’t beat them.

Umm doesn’t Miller and Lockwood have a co-op with another school to help field a team?

Where’d those move ins come from and did they really “move” anywhere?!?!

Miller technically has a coop but has never had a single player from it to my knowledge.
Lockwood has a coop and does what it needs to to field a team.
Liberal, Jasper, and Greenfield haven't always fielded a team.

Valle has a good QB, and some good defenders. But are down. The ball is in Hatyi’s court. The only threat on all ends to Hatyi imo is Penney.

Bleach have you ever figured school districts? I am curious as to the comparison of size in school districts all these schools have that we are talking about.
Total square miles and populations within would be interesting! Or in Lockwoods case I guess these days one might have to include Greenfield’s district as well!?!?

All I really know is Millers is about 60 miles long and about 15 miles wide.
I would think Jasper and Liberal cover a lot of area. Lockwood with GC should be good sized too.
All that really matters though is enrollment. How big the area is doesn't matter without people.

That’s why I included population within the square miles. Just curious how similar it is
