Just looking at class 4 salem and I don't know why they are ranked. They barely scraped by a class 1 school and lost by 15 to a so so class 5 school

I don't usually comment much on here, but I'm always intrigued when someone feels the need to start mouthing other schools, especially early in the year when no has hardly played.

Doing a little research on them, I don't know where you're getting you're info from because Salem hasn't even played a class 1 or a 5. They've played two class 4's and a class 2. I'm assuming west plains is the "so so" team you are talking about, which makes me question how much you know outside of the St james area. They are consistently one of the top class 4 programs in the state and just lost in OT to 7-0 Pacific. Then it looks like Salem beat class 4 eldon who's 3-2 by 19 and were up 20 after 3 and class 2 plato by 5 but were up 11 after 3. Looks like taking the foot off the gas or late subbing if I were to guess.

Having watched a lot of high school basketball, I've learned that looking at the margin of victories can be pretty unreliable because it usually comes down to whether the coach has some class and calls off the dogs or feels the need to go for style points.

These rankings don't count for anything anyways.

Chillicothe girls have a tough schedule coming up.. they play at Class 5 #2 Hickman on the 22nd, play C4 #6 Grain Valley on the 27th at NCMC Showcase, and #1 Benton and #10 Smithville are in Chillicothe's conference, along with Lafayette who is not ranked but has been playing a brutal schedule and is also very good.

I rarely post on here either, preferring to get my entertainment just by reading threads, however:

mohsbballfan, wow you hit the nail on the head, I wondered what Salem schedule he was looking at myself. And also agree with you that the rankings don't mean much, particularly this early in the season. It may end up later in season that tigerfan is correct but regardless your response was spot on. The fact that he had 2 of the teams in the wrong classes and must think West Plains is a so-so team reinforces your points.

I think St James and Salem are in the Sullivan tournament this week. Licking girls are always ranked and lose to St James in sectionals

Rankings make for great water cooler (and forum) fodder but if they held much sway the 2010-2011 #1-ranked Class 3 team (per a late season MBCA vote) might have won State, rather than losing in the District final (which they hosted).

There's a long way to go but something like 8 out of last 10 years has seen a SWMO team (60 mile radius of Springfield) in the Class 3 championship game, pretty decent bet it will be 9 out of 11.

West Plains is a very good basketball team. One of the best guards in the state. Tough trapping 3/4 court team and solid half court 1-3-1 team. They will make some noise this year. Salem is an interesting team with a big post player and an outstanding guard also. They play class 1 Warrenton this week at Sullivan... (just kidding, i know they arent class 1)... :)

Class 3, teams 2-5 are all in the same district. Hermann has beat father tolton. St. James and hermann and are in the same conference and will play later this season at STJ. Hermann lost to Clopton C2#2 by 19 and recently to Washington C5#3 by 15.

I would not be surprised if South Iron makes a jump into the top 10 in 1A soon. Very quick and athletic team with a bright future starting 2 freshmen and junior guard Ashley Mickan is a tough player that has range anywhere on the floor. Should be fun to watch them play some bigger schools coming up on their schedule.
