Donald Trump wants to postpone the election. If we do not have an elected US president by January 20, 2021, Nancy Pelosi will become President of the United States.

Raw might have gotten an A in 8th grade civics, but I was more worried about watching sports, and reading about them to study for my classes in junior high. So Metro can you tell me what you mean by "This has only happened one other time?" I have tried to search for what you are talking about and I have no idea.

The point about Pelosi being the next president is wrong. if they postpone the election then the congressional term runs out at the beginning of January. We would actually have the Senate Pro Tem as the President.

The closest to needed ever was when the VP (Agnew) resigned in 1973, and the president was expected to resign, though Nixon did not resign until 1974, after Gerald Ford was confirmed, and became the first and only person to hold the office of President of the United States without being elected to either President or Vice President. No other time has someone other than the elected President or Vice President in a regular election held the office.

Unless there is a certified election and members of the House are sworn in on or after Jan. 3rd, there won't be a House of Representatives, which leaves the Senate Pro Tem as the next in line.

Expec2Win, Check out president James K. Polk from Tennessee. President Polk was Speaker of the House before moving into the presidency. James K. Polk was president from 1845-1849. Check this out to see if I'm correct as I 'm a little bit busy this afternoon.

Metro you are correct, I misunderstood your statement. I was looking for an event that caused the succession of the Speaker to the President.
Kind of like when Bartlett had to step aside when his daughter was kidnapped and there was no vp so the speaker became president. I know it's tv, but I didn't know if there had been something back in the 1800's where neither the president and vp were not available and the speaker had to step in for some reason.
