Since being named as Head Coach at Knox County in 1965, and inheriting a team with only 23 players, he has compiled a career coaching record of 255-119-3 and was the Head Coach of the first ever Class One State Champions while at Princeton in 1968. He also coached two State Runner-ups in 1975 while at Nevada and in 1989 while at Marceline. He has won 17 Conference Championships and 16 District Championships in his illustrious career. He finished his career in 2009 by taking his Marceline Tigers to the State Quarter-Finals.

Coach Cavanah also served as the Head Coach at Centralia HS in the early 70's...and finished his successful Hall of Fame career as the head coach at Brookfield High School...while living in Marceline if you can imagine that. This added some spice to the Bell Game no doubt!
