State of Missouri is starting the year with over 6 billion dollars in the bank ( normally carry over funds are a couple hundred million)

We could give every taxpayer in the state a $1500 refund check but I am sure they will find something to spend it on.

I agree and how about raises for public school teachers in proportion to the minimum wage increase.
teachers over the long haul have a pretty sweet deal. I have friends that I went to high school with that started teaching in our school district on graduation from MSSU in Joplin. Two of them retired at age 52 after 30 years teaching. Thats 13 years before I will be able to retire with full SS benefits.

They may very well draw very good retirement benefits for more years than they actually worked. Missouri may have some of the lowest salaries for teachers in the country , but we have about the best retirement plan ,

I’m a retired teacher and I agree that the retirement end of teaching is a great deal. But, people are leaving education in droves and compared to other fields (science and math in particular), teachers are underpaid. It looks like the minimum wage increases by 10% or so. I’m sure we could give teachers a 10% raise with 6 billion laying around.
If teachers were required to work 50 weeks a year with a maximum of 7-8 paid holidays I would agree. Average teachers salary is around $55,000 in our school district I believe. Not going to get rich but not working for minimum wage.

Thank Governor Mel Carnahan and Missouri Dems for your retirement benefits. Hell, when Ashcroft was Governor Missouri ranked 47th in teacher salaries. Carnahan jacked up the minimum salary and showed respect to educators. GOP has been trying to get their hands on our pension plan for years.

Hey genius, are you figuring in the 3-4 hours every night my wife spent evaluating her students by grading every damn assignment they handed in and planning her lessons to individualize instruction to help them learn? No. You aren’t. I use to beg her just to toss some of the stacks of papers but she cared too damn much. Her exhaustion by the end of a school year earned her a summer vacation to recharge her batteries.

It’s always partisan isn’t it?
It actually is in this case.

That rich dude from StL owns the GOP in MO. He hates paying taxes and public education so you see where the priority is.

Show me a GOP senator or rep in MO that isn't beholden to Sequenfeld.

What about the districts where the average is 10-20k less than that?

As another poster referenced already, teachers put in many more hours than you 8-5ers.

This is an honest I want to know question. Wasn't the bulk of those funds Federal funds intened for covid relief, mostly renter relief and extended unemployment during the pandemic?

I assume you know teachers very rarely work only their 7 hours of class time everyday and that they work many a Saturday or Sunday to make their lesson plans for the next week. They rotate doing bus duty, rain or shine, hot or cold when the school day is over which adds at least 30 minutes to their work day. They also have to be in the classroom a few hours in the evening when it's time for separate parent teacher conferences for every kid in their class. They work a LOT of days/nights/weekends in the summer getting their class room ready for the start of school. They are not paid any more for all these things. The 'average' teacher salary is no where near that around here. I'd bet you'll find there are few teachers that don't work at least 50 hours a week.
